Mr. James Thomas Payne, Jr.
May 18, 1951 – July 21, 2013
James Thomas Payne, Jr., affectionately known as “Mr. Diamond,” passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2013 in Chester, VA.
He was born in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Winnie Fred Hunter Payne and James Thomas Payne, Sr. on May 18, 1951.
Mr. Payne attended the public schools of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and was a 1969 graduate of Atkins High School. He graduated with a bachelors degree from North Carolina Central University where he joined the brotherhood of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He later attended Webster University and earned a masters degree in Human Resources.
James was ranked as a Warrant Officer in United States Army and retired after 23 years of honorable service for his country. During his military career, Mr. Payne and his wife and son enjoyed twenty-three years of travel between Europe and United States. Following retirement from the Army, he enjoyed working for Capital One Corporation for over ten years.
Along with his parents, He was preceded in death by a sister, Sharon Payne Wells.
Those family members who survive include Bonnie Griffith Payne, his wife of 35 years; a son, James Thomas (Candice Renee`) Payne, III; three grandchildren, Marnez, Brandon and Imani; a sister, Maxine P. (Wiley) Charles, Washington, DC; his mother-in-law, Shirley Ann Griffith; a sister-in-law; a brother-in-law; loving aunts and uncles; his admired nieces and nephews and many ever-loving cousins.
Funeral services were held at 11:30 am on Saturday, July 27, 2013 in the Chapel of Clark S. Brown and Sons Funeral Home. The family greeted friends at 11:00 am and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity service began at 10:30 am. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery with Military Honors.
