Mrs. Margaret Nelson-Fuller

Margaret “Mickey” Nelson-Fuller of Winston Salem, NC passed Friday January 28, 2011. She is survived by her husband Floyd W. Fuller; three children: Lemont W. Whisonant, (wife Cynthia), Margo B. Whisonant , Tamiko Whisonant-Fulton (husband, David) three grandchildren; Nichole, LaMonica, and LaMar Whisonant, one great-grandchild, Nia Whisonant, all of the Winston Salem, NC, one sister, Dr. Barbara Jean Barrett, (husband James) of Tallahassee Florida, a surrogate daughter Brenda Gainey of Winston Salem, NC and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. She retired from CVS Pharmacy in Winston Salem, NC. She was well loved by many. She will be missed immensely.

Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Wednesday February 2, 2011 atShiloh Baptist Church 9116 East 12
th St 27101, Rev. Dr. Paul Lowe. officiating. The family will greet friends from 11:30 AM -12:00 PM. Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, 2730 Peters Creek Pkwy.

Mr. Eugene Edwards

Mr. Eugene Alfred Edwards Jr. was born February 6, 1934 to the late Eugene Edwards Sr. and Georgia Wilkes Edwards. He passed away Thursday morning January 27, 2011. He was preceded in death by his wife Vernetha Edwards, his parents, one son Archie L. Pace, a sister Delores E. Avant and a brother-in-law Rev. Seal E. Tyndall.

Mr. Edwards leaves to cherish his memories his son Charlie Lee Pace (Deresa), five grandchildren, Molanda P. Gaither (Kenneth) residing in Winston Salem, NC, Yolanda P. Collier (Anthony) residing in Travis Air Force Base, CA, Chiffon P. Hanna (Lamar) residing in Waukee , IA, Tiara Pace and Christian Pace residing in Winston Salem, six great-grandchildren, one older brother Joseph A. Edwards of Pittsburgh, PA, a sister Evelyn E. Tyndall residing in Winston Salem, NC,  a devoted niece Eleanor Tyndall-Jackson and many other nieces and nephews as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at RedeemedMissionary Baptist Church. The family will greet friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Baby Deandre Barnett-Taylor

Deandre Gary Barnett-Taylor also known as "Fat Fat," beloved son of Deandra Barnett and Jurone Taylor was born on June 18, 2010 in Winston-Salem, NC. During his short time with us, Deandre touched many lives with his smile, strength and determined spirit. He enjoyed music, family and friends by his
bedside. He especially liked you to run your fingers through his hair. Deandre fought a good hard fight, but was quietly taken from us on January 25, 2011. He was adored and loved by all whom he came in contact with and will always be loved in our hearts. He was preceded in death by his sister Juroney Barnett. He is survived by his parents Deandra Barnett and Jurone Taylor; two sisters: Tatyanah and Maniya Taylor and one brother, Malik Taylor; grandparents: Wanda Brinkley-Lewis, Gary and Gwendolyn Barnett, and Elvonia and Edward Durham; great great aunts: Florence Moreland, Ellen Simpkins, Marie Cole, Jeanette James, Twiller Collick, and Elsie Collick; great great uncles: Anthony Cole, John Cole, Larry Collick; great aunts: Janice M. Barnett, Brenda Barnett, Nicole Fuller, Janice A. Barnett; great uncles: Francis Barnett, Michael Barnett, Wayne Barnett, Steven Barnett, Gregory Barnett; aunts: Aerianna Lewis, Ginae Barnett, and Lisa Taylor; uncles: Ira Lewis, Michael Buckner, and Javon Taylor and a host of cousins and friends.

A service honoring his spirit was held on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 3:00 PM in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mary N. Mitcham

Mary Ann Neely Mitcham departed this life Friday, January 21, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center.  She was born February 27, 1924 in Lancaster, SC to the late Henry Neely and Maude McIlwain Neely.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. James A. Mitcham and sisters; Janette McKinzie and Estelle Neely.  Survivors are nephew Freddie L. Byrth, great nephew, Freddy A. Byrth (and wife, Laura), stepchildren: Phyllis Cannon, Elaine Wynn, and Paul Mitcham, goddaughter Gloria McIver and other relatives and friends. Ms. Mitcham received a BS Degree from Winston-Salem Teachers College (now Winston-Salem State University) and a Masters Degree from the University of Virginia.  She was a school teacher at the elementary and secondary levels in Virginia and retired from the Mount Airy City School System.  She was an active and faithful member of Grace Presbyterian Church and served on multiple committees in the Salem Presbytery.  She was a member of Church Women United, Les Amies Civic Club and the Red Hat Society. 

A brief memorial service will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 27, 2011.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Presbyterian Church, 3901 Carver School Road, Winston-Salem, NC, 27105.

Mr. James M. Floyd

Mr. James M. Floyd, 96, of Winston-Salem, a loving husband, father and grandfather passed away Monday, January 17, 2011 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.  He was born December 9, 1914 in Jonesville, SC to Jerry and Elizabeth Floyd. He retired from RJR Tobacco Company in 1977 where he served for 40 years. He was a member of Kimberly Park Holiness Church for over sixty years, where he served faithfully as a Sunday School Teacher and Chairman of the Deacon Board. James was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Queen. He leaves to cherish many fond memories to his two sons; James Floyd (Tina) and Gerald Floyd (Cheryl); nine grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 12:30 PM on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Kimberly Park Holiness Church.  Funeral services will follow at 1:00 PM. Interment will be in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Belle M. Rice

Belle M. Rice, daughter of the late Dock and Frances Miller was born in Council, North Carolina on February 20, 1916. She made her transition from this life on January 14, 2011 at the Springwood Care Nursing Facility. Mom was a product of the Bladen County and Wilmington, North Carolina School Systems. After finishing high school, she began to focus on how she could begin to create a more fulfilling life. Belle (beautiful) came to Winston-Salem, North Carolina in the thirties and was employed with the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company for a brief period. She later found a job as a domestic worker for the families of Judge Edward Heiffner and Mr. Earl Slick where she remained until her retirement. Shortly after her arrival in Winston-Salem, she met Edgar O. Rice and they were married in 1938. This couple was blessed with two children. They remained a union until his death in 1973. Belle was an avid church member of the Hanes C. M. E. Church for over 70 years. She served as a past president of Stewardess Board # 4 and was a member of the Missionary Society. She did whatever she could to help make the church a place of well being for all who entered. Nana, as she was affectionately known by her grand children, was a lady of many interests. Traveling was something she enjoyed. There was this desire within to visit as many places in the United States as she could which she did at every opportunity as long as her health allowed. She loved to sing and play music on the organ. Belle enjoyed sewing, crocheting, painting her house, gardening and shopping for beautiful clothes and hats which she wore with style. She leaves to carry out her legacy one daughter, Barbara A. Chapman, a son, Edward P. Rice, two grandchildren, Margo Gibson (Mark), Mia Chapman-Fisher (Damon); two great-grandchildren (Chelsey and Kadyn); three sisters-in law, Lena Love, Wilhemenia Ferguson and  Dorothy Rice (Oscar); One brother-in law, David  Rice (Mary)  and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
 
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 21, 2011 at 11:30 A.M. at Hanes Memorial C.M.E. Church.  The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Mr. James Lackey

Mr. James E. Lackey, 82, passed on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at his residence. He was born on July 18, 1928 to the late Cora Bell Lackey and Willie Rowe in Taylorsville, NC. He lived majority of his life in Winston-Salem and spent many years writing insurance and preparing taxes. Mr. Lackey was a veteran of the US Army. He is survived by: a sister, Barbara (Bill) Milsaps; cousins: James (Nellie) Lackey, Ann (Charlie) Dobbins, Michael Lackey, Mabeline (Ronnie) McClain, Mary Antone, and William (Linda) Lackey; aunts: Thelma Lackey and Myrtle Rowe; God daughter, Michele Slade; special friends, Edna Coleman and Claude Davis, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, January 19th in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. The family will greet friends 30 minutes prior to the service and interment will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Johnny E. Poole

Mr. Johnny James Evans Poole, 71, of 2927 Bainbridge Drive was born on March 23, 1939 in Greenville, SC to the late John and Rosie Evans Poole. He was a graduate of Sterling High School in Greenville, SC. Mr. Poole received his BA Degree in History from Winston-Salem State University and an MA Degree in Guidance from NC A&T State University. He resided in Winston-Salem for the majority of his life where he achieved many accomplishments. While attending WSSU, he was employed at RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company and upon completing his degree was hired by the NC Department of Corrections as a correctional officer. Mr. Poole later became a parole officer for the US Courts in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He also held positions as Home/School Coordinator for Cook Elementary School and Job Coach for Parkland High School. Mr. Poole was a retired Master Sergeant and received honorable discharge from the US Army Reserves after more than 29 years of service and a life member of the Non-Commissioned Officers Association of the United States of America. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, usher and president of the Layman’s League. He was also a member of the Trustee Board and Director of the summer camp program. In the community, he was a member of the Ralph R. Morgan American Legion Post 220 where he served in numerous positions, including Post Commander, 18th District Commander and chairman of the 18th District Oratorical Contest. He was a life member of the NAACP and executive board member of Experiment in Self Reliance. He was Past Master of the James H. Young Memorial Lodge #670, Past Grand Junior Deacon of the Grand Lodge of NC Prince Hall Affiliates, member of the King Solomon Commander of the Rites #64 and Sisters of James H. Young Chapter #592. He departed this life on January 10, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center. He leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted wife, Phyllistine Goode Poole; son, Jonathan Poole of Winston-Salem; two daughters: Darlis (Nathaniel) Hooks of Greensboro, NC and Marisa (Guy) Mensah of McLeansville, NC; two grandchildren, Layla and Nathan Hooks of Greensboro, NC; an uncle, Johnny Evans of the city and many cousins, in-laws and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 950 File Street, with Dr. Serenus T. Churn, Sr., officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM until 12 Noon at the church.

Mrs. Catherine J. Scott

Mrs. Catherine Jackson Scott, 83, passed away on Monday, January 3, 2011. She was born May 15, 1927 in Sharon, SC. Mrs. Scott is survived by her husband, James Scott; one brother, Joshua Lightening of York, SC; a host of relatives and friends. A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 3:00 PM in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home.

Mr. James T. Payne, Sr.

Mr. James T. Payne, Sr. was born June 18, 1924 to the late Flavella Evans-Leach and the late Robert C. Payne. He departed this life on January 2, 2011 in the peace and comfort of his home and his own bed. He attended the local public school system and was a graduate of Atkins High School and also completed several addtional courses at Forsyth Technical Institute. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company as a Machinist, after 30 years of dedicated service. He was a Veteran of the United States Army serving in France during WWII. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, the late Winnie Hunter Payne. He leaves to mourn: his oldest daughter, Maxine P. Charles (Wiley) of Washington, DC and theier son, Austin; daughter, Sharon P. Wells of the home and her son, athaniel and lastly, his son, James T. Payne, Jr. (Bonnie) of Chester, VA and their son, James, III of Fridley, MN. He also leaves a great granddaughter, Imani Payne and countless other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 8, 2011 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. The family will greet friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
