Mrs. Mary W. Ceasar

Mrs. Mary Wolfe Ceasar, 87, of Winston-Salem passed away Tuesday night, September 27, 2011 at Silas Creek Manor. She was born July 28, 1924 in Forsyth County to the late John and Katie Cuthrell Wolfe.

Mary retired from RJ Reynolds with over 36 years of service. She was a member of United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John Ceasar; four sisters: Etta, Janette, Annabelle and Elsie; four brothers: John, Tom, Mack, and Edward. Surviving are her devoted niece and nephew, Gloria (Clevester) Hemphill and Daniel (Zelma) Wolfe, both of Winston-Salem. She also leaves behind two nephews, Joseph Wolfe and Richard (Doris) Wolfe; two devoted cousins, Ruth L. Harper and Ella Mae White, also of Winston-Salem, and a host of cousins, great nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 3, 2011 in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Mildred H. Batchelor

Mildred Hairston Batchelor was one of four children born to the union of the late Rufus Reynolds and Emma Hughes Hairston. She was educated in the local public schools. In 1932, she married Percy Dan Batchelor.  One daughter, Jacquelyn Elaine Batchelor (Charles Roy Pierce) was born to this union.  Following her marriage, Mrs. Batchelor continued her educational pursuits and graduated from Winston Salem State Teachers College. She received a Master's Degree in Education from  and was one course shy of completing her Doctorate from Columbia University in New York. Mrs.Batchelor was an educator. She taught in various school systems throughout North Carolina. A large amount of her time was spent in Thomasville City Schools.  She retired from Winston Salem Forsyth County Schools after more than 30 years service with the state.  At the time of her retirement she was working with the Visually Impaired Program. Mrs. Batchelor received numerous awards and accolades throughout her teaching career.
At the age of fourteen, Mrs. Batchelor became a member First Baptist Church on Highland Avenue. During her years as a member, she served in many capacities. She was a member of the then called Young Women's Progressive Club.  She volunteered during the start up of the Church's youth summer camp.  For many years she served as a costume designer for the Church's annual outdoor live Nativity Scene.
Mrs.Batchelor was an active community member.  She served on the Forsyth County Mental Health Board. Mrs. Batchelor was a member of various clubs including, but not limited to the Columbia Heights Community Club, Semper Fi Pinochle club and the Rho Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated.   She had a love for the arts and was a proud member of the Along the Garden Path Flower Club. Mrs. Batchelor was a talented doll maker. She also enjoyed ceramics, needlepoint, candlewicking, macrame, and flower arranging.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents, Rufus and Emma Hairston; siblings and their spouses W. Frederick(Olivia) Hairston; Ernest L. (Leola) Hairston; and Helen Hairston Richardson; her daughter and son-in-law, Jacquelyn (Charles) Pierce.
She leaves to cherish her memory, grandchildren Helen Pierce (John III) Jones and Frederick Charles(Carmen) Pierce; great-grandchildren, Shannon, Christopher, Ashley and Charles Pierce, Chasity McCurdy, Joseph and Jonathan Pittman, Tyler, Ashleigh and Pierce Jones; great great grandchildren, Christopher Pierce,Jr. and Christian Pierce.  Mrs. Batchelor had a close relationship with and is also survived by her nephews and neices,  Ernest L Hairston II, William H. (Jill) Hairston, Wanda Hairston(James Mays) and Melanie Hairston and great nephews and great neices Ernest L. (Gia) Hairston, Kristin and Brittney Lawrence and Chandler Mays.During the last couple of months, Mrs. Batchelor was excited to meet the youngest member of the Hughes/ Hairston family and her great-grand nephew, Isaiah Hairston. Mrs. Batchelor was fortunate to have two very supportive first cousins who helped with her care during later years, Loretta Hughes and Mona Henderson{Ricky Wilson).She is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends.  The family wishes to extend their profound gratitude to Richard (Lillie) Byrd, Helen(George) Phillips, Carla(Chip) Rumph, Willie and Mary Grace Ware, Shonna Brannon, Betty Graves, Joi Holman, and Karen Nickson for thier unyielding support in Mrs. Batchelor's time of need.  Additionally, we are most grateful to Drs. Betsy English, Daniel Murphy, and Donald Heck for going above and beyond expectations in their compassionate care for Mrs. Batchelor during her illness.
A graveside service will be held at 12 noon, October 1, 2011 in Evergreen Cemetery with Reverend Glenn Pettiford officiating.

Mrs. Mildred Lucille D. Evans

Mrs. Mildred Lucille D. Evans, 76, of 2121 Gerald Street, Winston-Salem, went home to be with the Lord in the midst of her caring family on Thursday, September 22, 2011. Mrs. Evans was best known for her kind approach and continuous instructions to love, respect and care for one another.

She is survived by her three sons: John H. (Cellestine) Evans, Jr., Walter L. (Joyce) Evans, and Tony M. Evans; grandsons: John H. Evans, III and Zander M. Morris; four granddaughter: Staci M. Minor, Kenya M. Newsome, Toni E. and Tiffany N. Williamson; also left to cherish her memory are a host of great grandchildren and friends.

Funeral services were held at 12:30 PM in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home with Minister Bernard Morris-Pate, officiating. Interment in Parklawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Virginia P. Bailey

Virginia, “Gin”, “Mom”, “Grandma Ginny” born to the late R.C. Pledger, Sr. and Nola Pace Pledger in Forsyth County, NC, never met a stranger. She was the 4th born of 9 children. Virginia was predeceased by both parents; a brother, R.C. Pledger, Jr.; and sisters: Gretchen Horne, Lucille Armstrong, Myrtle Armstrong, Treva Cundiff and Dollie Gladden; as well as two children: Bobbie Bailey-Russell of Roosevelt, NY and William H. (Bill) Bailey of this city.

Virginia was a graduate of Carver High School and attended Winston-Salem Teachers College (now WSSU). She was a retiree of Thomasville Furniture Industries in Thomasville, NC.

She is survived by one daughter, C. Jean Bailey-Vincent (Curtis); two sisters: Roxie Pledger-Jones and Callie Pledger-Howell (Clyde, Sr.); and ex-husband, William Walter Bailey, all of Winston-Salem. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Rodney Speas, Stephanie Speas, Keith Bailey and Tia C. Vincent, all of the Atlanta, GA area; Tia D. Bailey and Cheryl Lynn Maske (Cliff) of Charlotte, NC; Zachary Speas (Lisa) of High Point; Cherie Crisp of Kernersville; Monique Speas of Greensboro; Todd Speas of Winston-Salem; and Kyle Martin of New York; great grandchildren and a great-great grandchild. She leaves loving memories to special friends Maggielena Keit, Carrie Shore, Robert Staten, Mrs. Cheeseborough and all the residents of Somerset Court, the workers there and all her church family who offered love and support throughout the years.

hanks to all doctors, nurses and others at Select Care Services who took such excellent care of her in her final days at Forsyth Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 12, 2011 at Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church. The family visited with friends on Sunday, September 11, 2011 from 7-8 PM. Interment in Parklawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Smitty Allen

Smitty Lester Allen was born on December 15, 1940 to Ms. Mary L. Brown and the late Mr. Otis Peebles. He departed this life on September 1, 2011. Smittty attended and graduated from Davie County Training School in Mocksville, NC. He retired from the Hanes/Sara Lee Corporation after over forty years of dedicated work. Smitty was a faithful and active member of Mt. Sinai AME Zion Church in Advance, NC helping out in whatever capacity he was needed. Smitty was an avid racing fan. You could find him at Bowman Gray Stadium or wherever there was Nascar. When he wasn’t watching cars go around the track, he could be found under the hood of one fixing something. Smitty had a memory like none other. He could tell you the when, where, and why of just about any event that happened during his life span.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Miss Betty Jean Mack. He leaves to cherish his memory, a faithful and loving wife, Shirley Allen; son, DeVore (Elzatha) Holman, Sr.; two daughters: Sharon and Sonya Allen; five grandchildren: DeVore D. Holman, Jr., Samuel Allen, Allen Walcott, Elane Allen and Smitty L. Allen, II; his caring mother, Mary L. Brown; loving sister-in-law, Carolyn Cunningham; two brothers-in-law, Lonnie (Romesena) Holman and Franklin Holman; a host of cousins, family and friends.

Smitty touched many lives in many ways and will be missed by all. Though his physical presence on this earth has gone, he will live forever in our hearts, minds and souls. We love you, Smitty!
