Mrs. Ethel Ruth Wallace

Ethel Ruth Dubose Wallace was born to the late Willie and Lannie Hunter in Winston-Salem, NC, on March 20, 1944.

Ethel Ruth was educated in the public schools of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and graduated from A.H. Anderson High School in the class of 1963.  Following graduation, she attended Winston-Salem State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Education.

She began a teaching career that led her to Thurgood Marshall Elementary School in Detroit, MI. Ethel Ruth was a dedicated educator and she retired after more than 30 years of service in the teaching profession.

Christian education began at a very young age for Ethel Ruth. She joined Mount Zion Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC and was baptized under the pastorate of the late Dr. K. O. P. Goodwin. She continued her Christian fellowship as a member of Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, MI.

After retirement, Ethel Ruth took on the role of caregiver to an ailing aunt, which led to a move to Martinsville, VA. She was very active in the Martinsville community and her dedication to teaching led her to volunteering and substitute teaching for the Henry County School System. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and she reigned as Mrs. NAACP in Martinsville from 2011-2012. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Fayette Street Historical Museum. And she was a Sunday school teacher for the adult class at Full Gospel Holiness Church.

Ethel Ruth answered the call from labor to reward at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, NC on Monday, November 19, 2012.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Willie Dubose; a sister-in-law, Cynthia Dubose and her aunt, Leeann Stevenson.

Those family members who will forever cherish Ethel Ruth’s memory include: James Wallace; her brother, Johnny Dubose; nieces, Carla (Keith) Eachrim; nephews, Ahmed Dubose and Hassan Dubose; a sister-cousin, Rebecca M. Jackson; several god-children, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A service in her memory will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC. The family will greet friends from 10:30 AM until 11:00 AM at the church.


Mr. Lee Council Grier

Mr. Lee Council Grier was born in Forsyth County to the late Robert L. and Ruth L. Grier. He passed away peacefully at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on November 19, 2012.

Mr. Grier was a graduate of Carver High School and attended NC A & T State University. He enjoyed the transportation industry and was a driver for the Safe Bus Company and logged many miles as a tractor trailer driver. He retired from R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company after more than twenty-eight years of dedicated service.

Mr. Grier was honorably discharged from the United States Navy following a tour of duty during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the Skyland Park Community Club #3 and a life-long member of Mount Zion Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Grier was preceded in death by his oldest and only sister, Veritas G. Jones.

Mr. Grier is survived his wife of 48 years, Rudine Ray Grier; two brothers, Robert L. and Lawrence W. Grier; two devoted nieces, Ruth Sherard and Patricia Grier; four nephews; a great nephew, Keith (Keely) Sherard; a great-great nephew, Keith Sherard, Jr. “KJ”; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, on Monday, November 26, 2012 at Mount Zion Baptist Church, with Dr. Serenus T. Churn, Sr. officiating. Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family with meet with friends thirty minutes prior to the funeral services at 11:30 a.m. at the church.


Mrs. Princella H. Lash

Mrs. Princella H. Lash was born on February 15, 1950 in Forsyth County, NC to the late Irene Hughes Hairston and Walter Leggett.  She attended the local schools and spent the majority of her life raising her children. After her children became young adults, she became an entrepreneur and opened a small boutique selling apparel.
Mrs. Lash was known for praising God and knowing His promises. She formerly belonged to Rainbow Tabernacle of Faith and later joined Uncompromising Word Fellowship.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lash was preceded in death by her oldest brother, James E. Hairston, Sr. and a grandson, Joseph Thorns.
“Silla” as she was known to family and friends leaves the legacy of her love to her husband: Michael E. Lash, Sr.; children: James (Rosalind) Thorns, Jr., Pamela Thorns, Robin Thorns, Monica Thorns, Regina Thorns (David) Godbolt, Nerissa Thorns (Shabaka Hairston), Michelle Lash (Kenneth) Williams, Michael (Tiana) Lash, Jr., Travon Lash (Kelvin) Wilson and Laura Lash (Demarcus) Brown; 32 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; siblings: Montana Stimpson, Michael (Phyllis) Hairston, Quinton Hairston, Inez Hairston (Robert) Davis; Arlesia (Andre’) Harris, Danzie Dunn, Blonnie (Herbert) Dunn, Thelma Thompson, Constance Leggett, Walter (Wilhelmina) Leggett, Jr., Carolyn (Frank) Shepherd, and Elsie Blanche Brooks; father and mother-in-law, Fred Miller (Lizzie) Lash; a sister-in-law, Vanessa Conrad and 3 brothers-in-law: Kenneth (Vernessa) Wright, James Lash, Wayne Lash and Fred Lash; two aunts: Inez H. Hairston and Sally B. Hughes; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Ms. Rachel J. Todd

Ms. Rachel P. Jordan Todd entered peacefully into eternal life in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 10,2012. Born May 16,1941, Rachel was the 7th of ten children to the late John & Lillie M Jordan.

After graduating from the Scotland County School system, she relocated to White Plaines, NY where she met and married Benjamin (Benny) Todd.  From this union came one daughter Michele. Later returning to NC, she worked for McLean Trucking Co and attended WSSU, before pursuing her career in cosmetology. She received her Masters & Doctorate from NCIC, and was a member ofTheta Nu Sigma National Sorority of the NBCL, Inc.

Rachel was employed by Pat's Barber Shop before opening RMM Salon and she also taught in the Forsyth County School System. She was a published author and artist. Her publications included 'Hate Doesn't Live Here Anymore' books 1 & 2.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother,Willie A Jordan and his wife, Margaret, and sister-in-law, Mary Jordan.

She is survived by her daughter, Michele Todd Davis; one granddaughter, Myca L Scaife, eight siblings; John (Annie) Jordan, Fannie Times, Charlie Jordan, Nathaniel (Alice) Jordan, Elizabeth Jordan, Shirley Brown, Lucille Monroe and Charles Jordan; extended family Kim & James Summers; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 15 at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Dr. John Mendez officiating. Family visitation will be held at 11:30 am with the funeral following at 12:30 pm. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.

Ms. Almetris D. King

Almetris "Denise" Wilson King (Gaga) was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to the late Henry M. and Mildred S. Wilson, on October 30, 1967. She departed this life on November 7, 2012 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Denise was a 1985 graduate of Parkland High School. She was a former employee of the Winston-Salem' Transit Authority, Forsyth Medical Center and the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System.

She was a member of Mount Able Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Along with her parents, Denise was preceded in death by two sisters, Wanda Bitting and Juanita Glenn.

She leaves to cherish precious memories a daughter, Quanecia Rhynes; a son, James Rhynes; and a granddaughter, Amani Kelly, all of the home; a sister, Valerie (Harvey) Dees, of the city; four brothers, Henry (Alma) Wilson, Jr., of Phoenix, AL; Fred (Carol) Wilson, Kenneth (Savier) Wilson, and Tyrone Forbus, all of the city; a god sister, Chareesta Handy; three aunts, Nathalie (Johnny) Love of Charlotte, NC, Janice Sims of Virginia Beach, VA and Judy Martin of the city; three uncles, Lawrence (Blondie) Smith of Lexington, NC, George (Cynthia) Sims of Virginia Beach, VA, and Sam Young of the city; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 PM on Saturday, November 17, 2012 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home with Elder Pamela Ferrer, officiating. The family will greet friends 30 minutes prior to the service.
