Mrs. Virginia Lee Reed

Mrs. Virginia Lee Brewer Jones Reed began her life on October 13, 1925 in Columbus, Ohio. She was the fifth of seven children born to the late Charles Thomas Brewer and Eulalia Jones Brewer. Mrs. Reed moved to Winston-Salem following her mother’s death in 1943. She spent her professional career working for the Hyatt Hotel. She lovingly cared for her daughter for over 60 years and on May 26, 2015 the Lord called her home to rest. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Katherine Jones and her six siblings. She leaves to cherish their memories of her: one daughter, Carolyn Jones; one son, Jeff (Charlette) Reed; eight grandchildren: Pamelia Howell, Rayponzia Murphy, Raymond Couthen, Jr., Ronald Couthen, Steven Couthen, Cary Couthen, Curtis Reed, James Long, Jr.; eighteen great grandchildren and sixteen great great grandchildren; a special devoted friend, Maggie Thompson. Funeral service for Mrs. Reed will be held at 12:00 Noon on Monday, June 1, 2015 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 11:00 AM until the funeral hour. Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care and Wake Forest Baptist Hospital.

Mrs. Harriet Adger Mann

Mrs. Harriet Adger Mann passed away May 14, 2015 at Forsyth Medical Center following an extended period of illness.

She was born to the late Sam Wall and the late Martha Adger in New Hanover County, NC, on October 14, 1941. She was a 1960 graduate of Williston High School.

Mrs. Mann was a former member of Union Baptist Church. She retired from Bell South (formerly Southern Bell Telephone Company) after 30 years of service.

Survivors include her devoted son, Stephon Adger; special godson, Calvin Clements, Jr.; granddaughters, Sierra Morgan, Taijah Capers, Brianna Jones, Alya Jarvis and Sade Reid; grandsons, Avye and Angel Adger; cousins: Barbara Adger  (Eugene) Devane, Willie J. Adger, Patricia Lofton (Frederick Davis), Diann (June) Winston, Sheila Adger Gooch and Evelyn Adger Bryant; extended family members and many friends.

A funeral service will be held at 1 pm, Thursday, May 21, 2015 in the chapel of  Clark S. Brown and Sons Funeral Home. The family will greet friends thirty minutes prior to the service at the chapel.

Mrs. Bertha Mae Berry

Mrs. Bertha Mae Berry took a heaven bound flight from labor to reward on Thursday, May 14, 2015, from Columbia, South Carolina following a period of illness. Mrs. Bertha Mae B. Berry was born on December 24, 1933 to the late Floyd Barber and the late Rozell F. Collins in Forsyth County, North Carolina.

She attended the public schools of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and graduated with honors from Old Salem Girls College in 1955 with a Business Degree. She was a faithful member of Zion Memorial Missionary Baptist Church. And she maintained an unwavering faith in God throughout her life.

Mrs. Berry retired from Kayser-Roth Corporation after 38 years of dedicated service to the company. She then went to work for nine years at Lankford Security.

Those family members who remain and who will forever cherish loving memories of “Bertha Mae” include her son, Frankie L. (Delores) Barber; grandchildren, Tionia (Linard) Daniels, Frankie Barber, Jr., and Jennifer Scales; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Almeana Lyles and Loretta Jackson of the city; two brothers, Jerome “Toney” Griffin and Ron and Elbert “Toby” Green; stepfather, Wilson Collins; four aunts, Mable Barber, Catherine (Roger) Greer and Barbara (MC) Winston, both of Taylors, SC and Helen McBee of Charleston, SC; a goddaughter, Jamie (Anthony) James; godsons, Fred and Frank Black; several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service will take place at 3:15 pm on Saturday, June 6, 2015 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown and Sons Funeral Home. The family will greet friends forty-five minutes prior to the service, at 2:30 pm in the chapel.

Mr. Capers E. Perry

Capers Edward Perry peacefully passed away on Saturday,  May 9, 2015 at Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation Center, following a period of illness.
He was born to the late George Norman Perry and Pauline Weaver Perry in Winston-Salem, NC on August 23, 1943.
Mr. Perry was a gold star member of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church where he faithfully served with the music and culinary ministries of the church. He also served as Church Sexton.
Capers retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company following 32 years of dedicated service. He also gave honorable service for his country in the US Army.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Arneta L. Perry and a brother and sister-in-law, Bobby (Jetty) Perry.
Survivors include his children, SchrRon (Clifford) Lawrence, Sherard (Lakisha) Edwards, Brooke Perry Darby and TwaKenna Spann; 11 grandchildren; his siblings, Norman Perry, Sr., Carl L. (Lamar) Perry, Gila P. Hamilton and Janice P. (George) McLendon; several nieces, nephews, extended family members and many friends.
A celebration of Capers’ life will  be held at 12 pm Friday, May 15, 2015 at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC.

Mrs. Belvina J. Wolfe

Mrs. Belvina Jean Wolfe was born March 31, 1946 in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Mary Grimes. She departed her earthly vessel to be with the Heavenly Father on Monday, May 4, 2015 with her beloved family by her side. Jean graduated from Carver High School and completed her Asociates Degree at McLean’s Business College. Jean was the oldest of nine siblings and known for her quick wittedness, unique sense of humor and giving heart. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Preceded in death by her late husband, Alfred Wolfe. Jean leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life and legacy five children: George (Tasha) Truitt, Temperance (Edward) Tobe, Clinton Truitt, Maria (Thomas) Wilborn and G’Ann Truitt; twelve grandchildren; one great grandchild; three sisters: Carol Miller, Cynthia Grimes, Michelle (Jimmy) Pringle; three brothers: Richard (Nolie) Miller, Sylvester Westly and Myron Grimes; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service was held at 2:00 PM on Friday, May 8, 2015 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. The family greeted friends 30 minutes prior to the service.

Mrs. Gwendolyn S. Saunders

Ms. Gwendolyn Stimpson Saunders passed away at her home May 6, 2015.She was born to the late Elizabeth S. Thompson and Roosevelt Pettiford in Winston-Salem, NC on July 22, 1956. Ms. Saunders was a 1974 graduate of Reynolds High and she attended Rutledge College. She was a faithful employee of Novant Health Forsyth Medical Childcare Center for more than thirty years until her passing. Survivors include her children: Chantia LaTasha Saunders, Larry Lee Saunders, Alex Saunders, Michael Edwards, Asia Baines, and India Baines; grandchildren: Larry and Kristian Saunders; sisters: Brenda Kaye Thompson and Linda Faye Thompson; special friend, James Monroe; a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Funeral service will be held at 12:30 PM, Thursday, May 14, 2015 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. The family will greet friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
