Mr. Robert E. Leak, Sr.
He is survived by five daughters: Andreia (Allen) Campbell, Antoinette Leak, Gloria (Reginald) Davis, Robin (Ronnie) Andrews of Atlanta, GA; two sons: Robert Elder LEak, Jr. of Winston-Salem and Charleston Leak of Charlotte, NC; two brothers: Rev. Charles (Olivia) Leak and Luther (Jessie) Leak; eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company after 28 years of dedicated service. He was a devoted employee of Goodwill Industries of Northwest, NC. Mr. Leak was also a self-employed concrete finisher for thirty-five years.
He was a member of Saint Mark Baptist Church where he served as a Prayer Leader and member of the Senior Choir. He has been diligent and committed in community organizations such as: Forsyth County Democratic Party, Winston-Salem Black Caucus, Winston-Salem NAACP, Southside United Health Wellness, C.H.A.N.G.E. Organization, Neighbors for better neighborhoods and Waughtown Business Association.
Mr.Leak received numerous awards, such as: 2003 Hero Strength Award by Boy Scout Troop #803 of Goler Memorial AME Zion Church, 2005 Dedication Award for service by St. Mark Baptist Church, 2010 Appreciation Award for service by the Easton Neighborhood Association and 2010 Service Award by the Winston_Salem African American Black Caucus Branch. He was also recognized as an outstanding Community Volunteer by Mayor Allen Joines and the City Council of Winston-Salem.
The family would like to give special thanks to Barbara Bennett and Doctors Gerald Fromson and Patricia Zekan, Scott Moore and Doctors Kinsley, Barush and Kendell.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, October 29, 2012 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. The family will greet friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will be in Salisbury National Cemetery.

Mrs. Helen H. Soney
She is survived by three children, Linda K. Jones and Robert Quincy Harrington, both of the city and Dr. Ralph G. Soney (Yolanda) of Greenville, NC. She leaves behind three grandchildren, Dedrick Denard Jones and Anjonette Harrington Wade both of the city and Garrit Harrington Soney of Greenville, NC. She was blessed with three great grandchildren Destiny Jones, MaKayla Jones and Cameron Wade and one great, great grandchild KaMauri King Jones. She is also survived by numerous wonderful nieces and nephews especially one who regularly ministered to her during her days of declining health, Ms. Jean Salter of Charlotte. Though too many to mention she loved and cherished the many nieces and nephews who knew her affectionately as “Aunt Helen.” Born in Winston-Salem she was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Brown Harrington and Chester Harrington. She was also preceded in death by seven siblings: Ethel Mae Harrington, Hazel Jones, Betty DuBose, John Wesley Harrington, Waymon Harrington, James Edward Harrington and Lewis Junior Harrington.
In 1989, she retired from the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System where she worked in food services at several schools over 20 years. She was a faithful member of the original Spencer Memorial Christian Church until ailing health prevented her from attending on a regular basis. She was a member of the senior choir. After Spencer Memorial became Messiah Community Christian Church she continued her association with the new church, being ministered to by faithful members well up until her death, such as Ms. Daisy Chambers, Ms. Beulah Hoover and Ms. Bert Sercey. Mrs. Soney loved her God, her children, her family and her neighbors and friends. She touched many and lived a long and happy life. In many of her associations and affiliations she stood as the last survivor until she went to be with the Lord. We rest in the assurance that she is happy, having been reunited with her mother, father, sisters, brothers and many friends.
The family will receive friends at 12:30 PM at the funeral home on October 30, 2012, interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Rest in peace Mama.
Mrs. Gladys O. Coles
As a young child Gladys was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Filbert, West Virginia. She attended Gary District High School in Gary, West Virginia where she met the love of her life, Rudolph Coles, Sr. Gladys later moved to Detroit in 1953 and was employed by Kresge. There, she and Rudy were united in holy matrimony and to this union 8 children were born.
Gladys loved to volunteer. Most of her volunteer work involved being with her children, i.e. Boy Scout den mother, Girl Scout troop leader. She was a very loving, compassionate and kind woman; very generous and soft spoken. She was an active Gary District Alumni in the Detroit, Michigan Chapter as well as the Winston Salem, NC Chapter. She enjoyed attending the school reunions each year. Some of her favorite pastimes were shopping, dining out, traveling, attending movies and plays, and just spending time with her family. She enjoyed studying with Jehovah’s witnesses and later became a member.
She leaves to cherish her memory, 8 children (spouses): Janice (David), Rudolph Jr. (Virginia), Victor (Rosalyn), Larry (Yvonne), Terrance (Nedrea), Linda, Sharon (Tyrone), and Debbie (Craig); 39 grandchildren; 49 great grandchildren; 7 sisters: Bernice, Dorothy, Bettie, Clotile (Albert), Arlette, Geraldine and Larna; 2 brothers: Bernard and Fonda; 2 sisters-in-law: Virginia and Jean; 2 aunts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Monday, October 22, 2012 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. he family will greet friends 30 minutes before the service.

Mr. Nicholas F. Thompson
He was a proud member of Atkins High School class of 1955 where he was an extraordinary athlete, serving as right tackle on the 1953 3-A State Championship Football Team and Co-Captain in 1954. He received the Winston-Salem Journal Newspaper Gridiron Honor in the same year and lettered in both Football and Track. He also acquired Auto Mechanics certification at Atkins. Upon graduation, Nicholas enlisted in the Army’s 11th Airborne Division where he boxed and played football. He toured Europe and was a fearless paratrooper. He loved telling stories about his experiences in the armed forces and served his country proudly.
After returning to civilian life, Nicholas worked as one of the first African American train mechanics for Northern Southern Railway, retiring in 1998. There was never a dull moment in his life as he tinkered with photography, fishing, hunting, and car restoration. He was a competitive cyclist, dog lover and an avid WSSU Ram football fan. He prided himself in the speed in which he could drive to Tennessee, with his children singing loudly, “He’ll be coming around the mountains when he comes”. Perhaps his greatest pastime was working on his lawn, which he meticulously cared for. Post retirement, he enjoyed working as a security guard throughout the city.
Nicholas was a devoted member of Goler Memorial AME Zion church where he was a member of the Men’s and Transportation Ministries. He formed a bond with Bishop Lartey and the two would greet each other with “As Per Usual”. He was inducted into the Atkins Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. He was also a member of the Masonic Bivouac Lodge 503 PHA.
Nicholas leaves to cherish his memory children, Nicholas Thompson III, Lennetta T. Bartley (Joe), Tony Thompson, Nicole T. McCollum, Danielle Durham and Sherry Gwaltney (Horace), loving grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, one brother-in-law, Sonny Dockery, a devoted nephew, Rev. Bobby Smith, a host of supportive nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends, Edward and Betty Strait and Mrs. Constance Bradley. He was preceded in death by siblings, Gertrude T. Cunningham, Ruth T. Robinson, Hazel T. Dockery, Eula T. Smith, Paul Thompson and Arvil Thompson.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 18th at Goler Memorial AME Zion Church, Rev. Dr. Calvin L. Miller officiating, Bishop Seth O. Lartey, eulogist. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the church.
Mr. James A. Crutchfield, Sr.
James attended Oak Grove School, and later enlisted in the army and fought in World War II. He worked at Talton Professional Photos as a dark room specialists and where he later retired. To his union to Julia Mae Lash Crutchfield, three children were born. He was preceded in death by his sons Forrest Wayne (Cynthia) Crutchfield, and James Alexander (Carolyn) Crutchfield Jr., and a sister Louise Crutchfield (Robert) Shouse.
He is survived in death by his daughters, Gloria (Rayvon) Cuthrell, Carolyn Pearson, Helene “Belinda” Robinson, and Marilyn (Jerry) Boyd; one son Reginald Pearson; twelve grand kids; seven great grand kids; one great great grandchild; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. Funeral services for Mr. James A. Crutchfield Sr. will be 12:30 pm, October 15, 2012, at the Bethania AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Louis Hunter, pastor officiating. Family visitation will be from 12:00 to 12:30pm at the church prior to the services. Interment will follow in the Bethania AME Zion Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Dorothy S. Johnson
Dorothy was a former member of Second Calvary Baptist Church. At Union Chapel Baptist Church, she was a member of the Sunday School, Senior Missionaries, and the outreach ministry in Liberia, Africa. Reaching out to others and encouraging them to “Stand on His promise” were her ministries. She was active with The Carver Senior Citizens Club, Democratic Party, The Westinghouse Retirees Club, Rho Zeta Amicae and The Northwood Estates Neighborhood Association.
Left to cherish her memory are daughters; Joycelyn V. Johnson, Deltra J. Bonner (Horace), Millicent J. Oliver (Herbert); son, Leo R. Johnson (Lisa); grandsons, Frederick L. Johnson (Joy), Anthony J. Bonner, Justin B. Oliver, Brandon M. Johnson; granddaughters, Ӓngela J. Bonner and Lauren R. Johnson; sister, Wyvetra S. Carter; nieces; nephews; cousins, extended family, and friends. Special thanks to Forsyth EMS, WS Fire Station 12, the physicians and staff in the Emergency Department, 6th Reynolds and the ACE unit at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
Visitation on Friday from 6PM-7 PM at Clark S. Brown and Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services at 1pm Saturday at Union Chapel Baptist Church. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery.

Mrs. Beulah L. Bunch
She was a member of the Atkins High School class of 1949 and a 1953 graduate of Winston-Salem Teachers College. Beulah was a great lover of music, especially classical. She was very proud of the seven years spent singing with the New York City Choral Society. She sang with any choir that she could find to sing “Handel’s Messiah”, which she truly loved. Mrs. Bunch was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church where she was a member of the Missionary Circle
and a past leader of the Miriam Group. She also sang with the Chancel Choir of Mount Zion, was a member of the Hattie File Club, BTU, and Hand Bell Choir. She truly loved the Lord and loved to help anyone she could. She was a member of the National Women of Achievement, where she was a member of the Hall of Fame. She was president of the Rural Hall NWOA. Mrs. Bunch also had memberships with the National Winston-Salem State University Alumni Association, The Kimberly Park Alumni Association, the Winston-Salem State University Former Alumni Queens Association and Singles and Friends.
Mrs. Bunch was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Bunch; daughter, Angela Bunch; brothers: Leon Long, Leroy Long, and Ernest Long. She leaves to cherish her memory: a son, Charles (Christa) Smith, Jr. of Atlanta, GA; a sister, Wheatley Octavia McLurkin of Washington, DC; seven granddaughters: Christina Smith of Atlanta, Ga, Jamaria Bunch, Jonay Howard, Jaquita Howard, Lakesha Byrd and Ashanta Byrd-Arnold, all of Winston-Salem, Charneva Franklin of Clarksville, TN; five grandsons: James R. Smith, Charles Avery Smith of Atlanta, GA, Chandi Crawford of Decatur, GA, Charles “Chuckie” Smith of Clarksville, TN, and Lester Byrd of Winston-Salem; numerous great grandchildren; a devoted cousin, whom she often called her sister, Gwendolyn Thompson; lots of first and second cousins: The McCoy, McMillan, Dalton, Hampton and Long families; three lifetime devoted friends: Annie Pearl Wilson of Winston-Salem, Thelma Foy of Washington, DC and Wilma Howard of Roxbury, Mass.
