Mrs. Betty Z. Harris

Mrs. Betty Ziglar Harris (aka “Chris”) passed away at Baptist Hospital on Friday, July 26, 2013.

She was born in Rural Hall, NC to the late Bertha Ziglar and Chris Walker on November 18, 1932.

Mrs. Betty Harris, “Chris” was a member of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church for more than 50 years. She later joined Greater Galilee Baptist Church.

She retired from Bowman Gray School of Medicine after 30 years of dedicated service. Following retirement she worked for the National Labor Board and Christian Carolina College. Mrs. Harris was a member of the St. Mary’s Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Harris, Sr.; a son, Ferlandrus “Alexander” Harris; two sisters, Stella Oakes and Bertha Reynolds; six brothers, Charles, Oscar, Archie, Levi, Alonzo and Ranzy.

Survivors include her three children, Charles E. Harris, Jr., Doris “Charlene” (Aaron) Oliver and Maurice L. Harris, Sr.; sister, Margie R. Reaves; sister-in-law, Mary Frances Barr; three grandchildren, Chante E. (Verena) Taylor, Sr., Maurice Harris, Jr., and Shamar Harris; three great grandchildren, Monica Taylor, Chante E. Taylor, Jr., and Christine Taylor; a host of nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 1:00 pm at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Robert L. McGowen, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:00 pm at the church.

Mr. James T. Payne, Jr.

Mr. James Thomas Payne, Jr.
May 18, 1951 – July 21, 2013
James Thomas Payne, Jr., affectionately known as “Mr. Diamond,” passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2013 in Chester, VA.
He
was born in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Winnie Fred Hunter Payne and James Thomas Payne, Sr. on May 18, 1951.
Mr. Payne attended the public schools of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and was a 1969 graduate of Atkins High School. He graduated with a bachelors degree from North Carolina Central University where he joined the brotherhood of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He later attended Webster University and earned a masters degree in Human Resources.
James was ranked as a Warrant Officer in United States Army and retired after 23 years of honorable service for his country. During his military career, Mr. Payne and his wife and son enjoyed twenty-three years of travel between Europe and United States. Following retirement from the Army, he enjoyed working for Capital One Corporation for over ten years.
Along with his parents, He was preceded in death by a sister, Sharon Payne Wells.
Those family members who survive include Bonnie Griffith Payne, his wife of 35 years; a son, James Thomas (Candice Renee`) Payne, III; three grandchildren, Marnez, Brandon and Imani; a sister, Maxine P. (Wiley) Charles, Washington, DC; his mother-in-law, Shirley Ann Griffith; a sister-in-law; a brother-in-law; loving aunts and uncles; his admired nieces and nephews and many ever-loving cousins.
Funeral services were held at 11:30 am on Saturday, July 27, 2013 in the Chapel of Clark S. Brown and Sons Funeral Home. The family greeted friends at 11:00 am and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity service began at 10:30 am. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery with Military Honors.

Mr. George Douglas Berrow

Mr. George Douglas Berrow
Jun. 17, 1950 – July 15, 2013

George Douglas Berrow was born on June 17, 1950 to the late Charlene Berrow in Tylertown, MS. He departed this life on Monday, July 15, 2013.

George attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and graduated from Atkins High School in 1970.

He was a member of Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church and a volunteer with the International River Run Festival.

George was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Nelda, Sharon and Yvonne; and his grandson, George Janias Berrow.

Family members left to cherish his memory include his companion, Cheryl Parker Mouzon; three sons, Melvin Douglas Berrow, George Douglas Berrow, Jr. (Gertrude) and Olajuwon Berrow; four grandchildren, LaTadre Fleming, Ajahnta Berrow, Antwan and Chris; four brothers, William (Mary) Dean, Laurence and Charles Berrow, Mark (Adrienne) Williams, all of the city; 14 nieces; 11 nephews; an aunt, Mildred Dean, New Orleans, LA; several great nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2013 in the Chapel of Clark S. Brown and Sons Funeral Home. The family will greet friends at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel.

Mr. Alvis Thomas Ijames

Mr. Alvis Thomas Ijames “Tom”
Jan. 3, 1933 – Jul. 9, 3013


Mr. Alvis Thomas Ijames of Tobaccoville, NC passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2013.
He was born on January 3, 1933 in the suburbs of Mocksville, NC to the late Roosevelt and Ira Ijames.

Mr. Ijames was a 1953 graduate of Davie High Training School. He was baptized as a child at Mainville AME Zion Church in Mocksville. He transferred his membership to Center Grove AME Zion Church in Tobaccoville where he served as Steward and enjoyed fellowship in the weekly Bible Studies.

Following military service for his country during the Korean Conflict, Mr. Ijames was honorably discharged from the United States Army.

He retired as a mechanic for the Anchor Motor Freight Division in Winston-Salem, NC. His most recent employment with McClean Parking gave him the opportunity to continue his joy of communicating with other people.

Along with his parents, Mr. Ijames is preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Speas Ijames; a sister, Ruth Faye Sales; and a brother, Claude Calvin Ijames.


He is survived by his children, Vanessa Barker and Alan “Bunny” Ijames; a sister, Betty Naylor; four brothers, William, Frank, Donald and John Arthur, all of Mocksville; his grandchildren, Justin Barker, Cullowhee, NC, Jonathan Barker, Kendra and Kisha Ijames and Christina Salley-Ijames, all of Winston-Salem; his mother-in-law, Lillian Speas; three sisters-in-law, Deloris (John) Harris, Ann Leak and Belinda (Alfonza) Harris; a brother-in-law, Lester Speas, Jr.; countless nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; amiable friend, Sallie Carr, Cleveland, NC; special niece, Major Amanda Leak Alexander; and his best friend/cousin, Clyde Scott, Sr.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, July 14, 2013 at Center Grove AME Zion Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm-3:00pm at the church

Mr. Samuel Jenkins

Samuel M. Jenkins, Jr. entered into a peaceful rest on July 9, 2013.  Born into the family of the late Samuel and Azalee Jenkins on January 2, 1946, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, he was one of seven children.

His outgoing personality endeared him to everyone he met.  To Sam, there were no strangers; he encircled each person in an embrace of warmth and welcome.  His kind, joyful spirit touched the lives of many.      

Sam was devoted to his family and friends, whom he loved and cherished.  Especially dear to him were the love and friendship of his closest friends in the Anderson High School Alumni Association, N.C. A&T Alumni Association and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.  

In sum, Samuel was blessed with many gifts, and he was a blessing to others.   Surely, his works will praise him in the gates of heaven.  
Lovingly celebrating his life are his sisters, Sandra Armstrong (William) – a devoted twin sister who was also his primary caregiver, Sylvia Jenkins, Susan Gillis, and Sharon Jenkins; two step-daughters, Donna Johnson (Elando) and Devon Reid; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. 

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, July 15, 2013 at Friendship Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will visit with friends one hour prior to the service at the church and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity final rites will begin at 11:30 AM.

Mr. Horace B. Hord

Horace Blainey Hord, September 21, 1929-July 8, 2013
On July 8
th, after a long illness, Horace Blainey Hord, 83, died at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Boiling Springs, NC to Raymond Dewey Hord and Dona Spake Hord, he moved at the age of 12 with his family to Shelby where he enjoyed his teen years among his Spake, Wilson, Long and Hord cousins. He graduated from Shelby High School in 1947.
Horace joined his father in the family business and gained expert skills in automotive maintenance and repair. He served a short time in the US Navy and in 1956 entered NC State College (now University) where he received a BS degree in Agricultural Economics in 1960. After graduation he served as County Office Manager for ASCS in Gaston County for almost two years before joining Pfizer Laboratories in Winston-Salem. He spent his professional career with Pfizer in a job he loved and found interesting and challenging, becoming a Senior Certified Medical Representative, achieving top salesman in the USA in 1980, and working 36 years until his retirement.
In 1955, Horace married Mary Ruth Dedmon, his high school sweetheart, and they raised four daughters. He enjoyed being in the Gastonia Jaycees and participating in Toastmasters in Winston-Salem. Horace also enjoyed anything mechanical and liked the challenge of special problems, including rebuilding a freezer that even the repairman said couldn’t be fixed. He dedicated his free time in early years to making play equipment for neighborhood kids, took pride in doing all home repair projects himself, and tried to teach his daughters basic plumbing, electricity, and other skills. He allowed his children the freedom to travel and explore the world, even though he was happiest close to home. Horace had beautiful blue-gray eyes and his smile would light up a room.
Horace was a loyal member of Peace Haven Baptist Church for many years and served in several capacities including deacon, Sunday School teacher and Brotherhood leader, and he had a special interest in the sound system and operation and maintenance of the heating/AC system.
His parents and sister Mary Sue Knight preceded him in death. Sister Dorothy H. Summey survives him. Also surviving are his wife of 58 years and his four daughters and their families: Deborah Hord of Winston-Salem; Melanie Hord, husband Felipe Arauz and their sons Isaac and Aaron Arauz of San José, Costa Rica; Charlotte Hord Smith and husband Scott of Carrboro; and Emily Hord MacMillan, husband John and their children Elizabeth, Duncan and Stuart of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service was held at Peace Haven Baptist Church in Winston-Salem on Thursday July 11, 2013 at 7pm with Rev. Nathan Parrish and Dr. Ray Benfield officiating. Grandchildren and daughter of Horace’s sister Dorothy will provide music.
Horace’s wife and daughters thank the family, friends and neighbors who shared their love and assistance throughout his illness. They give special thanks to caregiver Linda Jarrett and nurse Kelly Heath, and to CNA Tina Gladden for her role in helping keep Horace comfortable in his last years.

A second memorial service was held Sunday July 14
th at 3pm at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Shelby with Reverend Jeff Brendle and Dr. Dale Steele officiating. Music will be provided by the grandchildren of Horace’s sister Mary Sue and the Elizabeth Church Senior Choir. A time of visitation will follow the service.
