Mrs. Vivian C. Evans

"Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens....Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness....Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her....Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised." Proverbs 31: 10-12, 15, 25-26, 28, 30.

Mrs. Vivian Clingman Evans waited 102 years and one day on her change to come and peacefully, while sleeping, responded to the Master's calling Sunday evening, July 18th. She was born July 17, 1908 as the fourth of seven children to the late William and Sarah Clingman of Clemmons, NC. They lived on a small farm where she learned an appreciation for gardening, cooking, sewing and using all of God's bounty, She was a very good student, advancing to the limits of a segregated education in Forsyth County Public Schools. In 1922, she was baptized and added to the Capernaum Church of Christ where she faithfully served and attended, until the day she was last hospitalized, two weeks before her transition.

Mrs. Evans was a great cook and her fried apple pies were the rave! She made her own clothes and quilts; she sewed, knitted, crocheted and exhibited at the fair and often took home first prize. She loved her family, church family, and neighbors and shared generously with them. Loving, wise, and kind, she was also independent. Later in life, she joined the cafeteria staff of Forsyth County Public Schools and retired in 1974 from West Forsyth High School. Courageous too, she started driving a T-Model Ford at 13 and continued driving until she was 94. She was a busy lady, who once remarked, "if you don't use it, you'll lose it; you must keep moving." And she did. Her legacy of faithfulness, determination, and as a strong advocate of education will endure.

On June 24, 1933, she married her husband of 62 years, John Andy Evans, who preceded her in death in September of 1995. The union was blessed with three sons; the youngest, Robert, died July 10, 2004.

Also, preceding her in death were six siblings: James Clingman, Wallace Clingman, Thelma Dow, Odessa Perry, Odel Clingman, and Clarence Clingman.

Surving are her loving sons John A. Evans, Jr, (Maria) of Gainesville, VA and James H. Evans of the home; granddaughters Allison E. (David) Martin and JoAnna Evans; and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 24th at Capernaum Church of Christ, Clemmons, NC with Bro. Alan Brown, officiating. The family will visit with friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment in the church cemetery.
