Mr. Monroe Clinton Wharton

Mr. Monroe Clinton Wharton, was born on March 16, 1918 in Winston-Salem, N.C. to the late Monroe C and Susie Cuthrell Wharton. He attended public schools in Forsyth County and later served in the Navy. He retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company after many years of service. Monroe was also a life member of the West Yadkin Masonic Lodge #806. Mr. Wharton was a faithful member of Glenn's Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, where he served on the Steward & Trustee Board, and was a devoted Class Leader until a decline in his health.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Shore Wharton; son Earl (Ida) Wharton; three grandchildren, Earl (Jennie) Wharton, Janet Parsons and Lisa Elliott; three great-grandchildren, Darren (Mary Jo) Wharton, Brian Wharton and Justin Parsons and one great-great grandson, Jaden Wharton. He also leaves to cherish his loving memories two brothers, Mr. William (Watina) Wharton of Mocksville, N.C., and Mr. Richard Wharton of Chesapeake VA., and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Lucille M. McSwain

Lucille G. Manning Surratt McSwain, age 85, died peacefully on May 4, 2010 at the Katie B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
The daughter of Marie Manning and Verley Surratt, she was born June 3, 1924 in Cherokee County, South Carolina. She had an opportunity to live with her maternal grandfather Giles Manning, her maternal aunt Hattie Roberts and husband Fulton. Lucille and her two brothers Franklin Louis Manning and William H. Manning were cared for by these loving relatives after the death of their mother.
Lucille joined the Concord Baptist Church at an early age, moved her membership to the Ebenezer Baptist Church of Waco and upon moving to Kings Mountain joined the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She was a member of the Senior Choir, Golden Hearts, the kitchen committee and Usher Board. She was a member of the Eastern Star Society.
Lucille married the late Wilbert McSwain April 16, 1943 in Gaffney, South Carolina. She is the mother of nine children, Lawrence Calvin McSwain (Vivian), Marie Jamerson (Robert), William Arthur McSwain (Queen), Frances Leach (Donald-deceased), Ernestine Luckey (Perry), Fulton Louis McSwain (Yvonne-deceased), Linda McSwain-Randall (Carnell), Janie Hardman (Lonnie), and Robin Sims (Mason).
Lucille required all of her children to absolutely do three things during their formative years, go to church, go to school and start working at an early age. All nine of her children are left to cherish loving memories of Lucille. She has one surviving brother Franklin L. Manning of Brighton Garden of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She has two surviving sister-in-laws Sarah Manning of Kings Mountain and Jennie Ruth Phillips of Shelby, North Carolina.
Lucille is also survived by 16 grandchildren Mechelle, Janine, Myshalae, Steveland, Courtney, Timothy, Donielle, Tisha, JR, Travis, Andre’, Shaun, Brandon, Shari, Dominique, and Josef.
And by 15 great grandchildren: B.J., Briehona, Melvin, Ajee, Jakari, Skylar-Marie, TJ, Amyah, Autumn, Tristan, Niklas, Caleb, William and Jarrett. A host of other relatives and friends.

The Family visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. with Homegoing Celebration at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 220 Watterson Street, Kings Mountain, N.C. 28086 with Rev. Dr. Clinton Feemster, officiating. Interment will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain, North Carolina. The family request that donations be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 27103 in place of flowers.

Mrs. Carolyn H. Crutchfield

Mrs. Carolyn Yvonne Crutchfield, affectionately known as “Poolie”, passed away Monday, May 3, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center.  She was born Carolyn Yvonne Hillian on Dec. 24, 1949 to the late Rev. James Robert Hillian and Mrs. Eva Little Hillian in Forsyth County.  Poolie graduated from Caver High School in 1968 and afterward she attended and graduated from Russell’s Business College on May 18, 1970 with a diploma in Secretarial studies.  From there she went on to work at RJReynolds as an Executive Assistant until she retired.  Poolie was an active member of Union Chapel Baptist Church.  She participated in Vacation Bible School, Adult Sunday School, Scholarship Committee and the Mass Choir.  During her children’s youth, she was a dedicated mother and an active participant in the Pfafftown Packers Booster Club, Tri-City Relays Track Club, Super Star Math Volunteer, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, March of Dimes, Crosby Scholars, Carver Alumni Association, and Black Achievers. But Poolie’s passion was for weddings.  She was a seamstress, wedding planner, and florist to family and friends alike.
Mrs. Crutchfield was preceded in death by her loving and devoted soul mate of 36 years Mr. James Alexander Crutchfield, Jr.; father Rev. James Robert Hillian; her sister Mrs. Eva Wilson; her mother-in-law Julia Crutchfield; her brother-in-law Mr. Forrest Wayne Crutchfield; sister-in-law Mrs. Cynthia Crutchfield.
 She leaves to cherish her memory; a son Mr. Allen Alexander Crutchfield of the home and a daughter Ms. Joslynn Yvonne Crutchfield of Houston, Texas.
She is also survived by her mother Mrs. Eva Little Hillian; four brothers, Mr. James L (Vera) Hillian, Mr. Calvin (Nancy) Hillian Sr., of Winston-Salem; Mr. Clifton (Constance) Hillian Sr., of Atlanta, Georgia; Mr. Donald Johnson of Detroit, Michigan; two sisters, Mrs. Viola H. Werts and Evangelist  Annie H. Campbell of Winston-Salem; a father-in-law Mr. James Crutchfield Sr.; a sister-in-law Mrs. Gloria (Rayvon) Cuthrell; and two very dependable and caring friends Mildred Porter and Sally “Cookie” Kennedy of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12p.m., Friday, May 7, at Union Chapel Baptist Church 300 West 25
th Street with Rev. Konnie G. Robinson officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:30 am until the time of the funeral at the church. Interment will follow in Bethania AME Zion Church Cemetery.
