Mr. Lloyd N. Barrow

Lloyd Nolan Barrow was born August 31, 1951 in Washington D.C. He was the eldest child of the late Florence Y. and James N. Barrow. After a brief Illness he departed this life on Monday, September 20, 2010 in the loving home of his brother and sister-in-law Ronald 'Barrow and Tereasa Jones.

Lloyd attended Washington, DC public schools and graduated from Anacostia Sr. High School in June of 1969. In 1971, he married Patricia Miller. Shortly after Lloyd joined the United States Army where he served his country faithfully. Lloyd later joined the Army National Guard. He proudly served for 17 years as a Military Police Officer (MP). During his tenure in the Army National Guard, Lloyd served in Kuwait and In Asia during
Operation: Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. After faithful service, Lloyd was awarded an Honorable Discharge as a Military Police Sergeant on May 19th, 2001. Lloyd was will be remembered for his love of music, his favorite group, Frankie Beverly and Maze, and his entertaining personality.

He leaves to cherish fond memories Kenneth N. Barrow (son), Sherletta Y. Barrow (daughter), Crystal Graves (daughter), Brothers: Eric K., Arnold J., and Ronald J. Barrow; Sisters: Jacqueline E. Taylor and Ronda L. Jennings; Brother-In-law, Rogers L. Taylor, Jr.; Sisters-In-Law, Faith Barrow and Tereasa Jones, Grandchildren: Kenneth Tapp-Barrow, Rick N. Barrow, Victoria J. Barrow, NaDaija F. Barrow, and Armani Moore; Aunts, Lillian Wilson and Georgella Bell; Uncles: Reuben Bell and Grim Wilson, Jr.; Seven nieces; Seven nephews; Three great nieces, and two great nephews; and host of cousins, loving relatives, and devoted friends.

Ms. Lisa D. Jackson

Ms. Lisa D. Jackson, 47, passed on Sunday, September 19th at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born February 28, 1963 to the late Sam Williams, Jr and Dorothy R. Williams.

Lisa was a life-long resident of Winston-Salem and a 1980 graduate of Parkland High School. She attended NC Central University and was a Winston-Salem State University.

She was a lifelong member of Goler Memorial AME Zion Church where she was active in the Prison Ministry Choir, Buds of Promise Missionary Society, Home Missionary Society, Vacation Bible School, Genesis Liturgical Dance Ministry, Young Adult Sunday School teacher and an Exhorter. She loved her coir and helping people. She was active in the community working with AIDS Outreach and grant writing.

Lisa is survived by: one daughter, Dajona Jackson, of the home; her mother, Dorothy Williams; one brother, Ronnie (Beverly) Williams; two uncles: Frank Wilson and Nathaniel Phillips; five aunts: Clarice Woods, Lucille Johnson, Mae Frances Williams, Ernestine Williams and Syreatha Robinson; niece, Sandra Miles; nephew, Darron Williams and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. Vadie C. Burns

Mr. Vadie Charles Burns, Jr., 86, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, September 18 in Walkertown, NC. Mr. Burns is survived by his wife, Jane Burns, daughter Rona of Winston-Salem, NC, son Charles (Lula) of Greensboro, NC, grandchildren, Lia (Yonas) Melakou of Alexandria, Va, Shana (Akaron) Davis of Manassas Park, Va., Devin Burns of Greensboro, NC, and one great-granddaughter, Summer Davis. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Deadra Turner of Decatur, Ga., Mattie (Moses) Williams-Vincent of Rural Hall, NC. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mr. Burns was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II and a retiree of AT&T.

The
family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Hospice of Winston-Salem, The American Cancer Society or the ALS/Catfish Hunter Foundation.

Mrs. Elizabeth B. Lewis

Elizabeth Dandridge Brown Lewis of 1701 Hattie Avenue passed away on Thursday, September 9, 2010, following an extended illness. Elizabeth was born in Charles City County, VA on December 8, 1916 to Sylvanus and Beatrice Webster Brown. She was the first-born and the last remaining of the Brown family of 3 girls and 5 boys. Preceding her in death: Alverta B. Fields, Doris B. Christian, Harrison Brown, Wendell Brown, Thomas Brown, Alfred Brown and Edward Brown.

Elizabeth was a graduate of Virginia State College.She received her Master's Degree from Columbia University and did further study at, Plymouth Teachers College, New Hampshire, and UNCG Woman's College of Greensboro. Elizabeth had been a resident of Winston-Salem since 1938. She was a teacher in the Winston-Salem School System, Kimberley Park Elementary, Paisley High School, Paisley Junior High, and Philo Junior High as a teacher and counselor. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Highland Avenue. She worked diligently with the Women's Service Council of the Church. She was a Charter member of the Sigma Shadows, an Auxiliary of The Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, and a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. She excelled in Bridge and was a member of the Kings and Queens Bridge Club.

Survivors include: 3 nieces, Nina Mae Christian, Wynne R. Elizabeth Brown, Trevonia Brown Gaither, 7 nephews, Arthur I. Christian, Kenneth Christian, Milton Woodward, Wendell H. Brown, Thomas E. Brown, Maceo Brown, and Jamal Fields; one sister-in-law, Geneva Brown. The family extends special thanks to Michelle Benton, Carrie Fitzgerald, and Mary Pauling for their loving care for Mrs. Lewis.

The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church on Highland Ave. on Thursday, September 16th at 12 noon. The family will meet friends at the church from 11:30 to 12 noon. On Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. September 15th, the family invites friends to drop by Elizabeth's home place at 1701 Hattie Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Virginia State University at 1 Hayden Dr., Petersburg, VA 23806. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.
