Mrs. Florence J. Rennick

Florence Rennick, 95, of Dublin Drive, died June 29, 2011, at the Brian Center, following an extended illness. The funeral service will be noon Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at First Baptist Church on Highland Avenue, with the Revs. Darryl Aaron and Glenn Pettiford officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Her extended family will receive friends immediately preceding the funeral at 11:30 a.m. at the church.
Mrs. Rennick was born June 18, 1916 in Winston Salem. Preceding her in death were her parents, George and Violet Horne Jackson, her husband, John N. Rennick, her brother, Robert Jackson, and a lifelong friend who was like her sister, M. Louise Smith.
She was a proud graduate of the Atkins High School Class of 1934 and a lifelong member of First Baptist Church on Highland, where she served and attended faithfully until her health failed. At First Baptist, she was a Gold Star Member, charter member of both the Women’s Progressive Club and the Fellowship Tea Committee.  Mrs. Rennick was known for her sense of fashion and style. Her entire professional career was spent in the fashion industry, serving as the store manager of Robins’ Women’s Wear at Northside and a salesperson at the fashionable Montaldo’s, from which she retired in 1994. 
Mrs. Rennick is survived by a sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Jackson, of Winston Salem, two nephews, Oswell Jackson of Houston, TX and Horace Jackson of Atlanta, GA, and longtime friends Harvey D. and Billie Jones, of Winston Salem, who assisted in her care during her illness. Acknowledgements are in order for the staff at Hospice of Winston Salem and the Brian Center for the intimate cate they rendered.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Winston Salem and the Louise Smith Summer Adventure Camp at First Baptist Church.  

Mr. James E. "Moo Koo" Henderson

Mr. James E. “Moo Koo” Henderson, 65, passed away on June 22, 2011. He was born on February 10, 1946 in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Wilbord and Christine Young Henderson.

Mr. Henderson was a Baptist by faith. He was employed by RJ Reynolds after serving as a Sergeant in the US Army from 1965-1968 in the Vietnam Conflict.

In addition to his parents, “Moo Koo” was preceded in the death by his siblings: Nathaniel Henderson, June Henderson, and Johnnie Mae Adams.

James is survived by his daughters: Toni Henderson, Evette Blakely, and Jessica Adams; son, James Henderson, Jr.; ten grandchildren: Cherelle, Jazmine, Emanuel, Lakenya, Domonic, Alayah, Torrian, McKenzie, Jocelyn and Joshua; four great grandchildren: Camoury, Kadian, Autumn, and Isaiah; a sister, Ruth Henderson of Verona, VA; brother, George Henderson of the city; a devoted niece, Judy Martin and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. The family will greet friends 30 minutes prior tot he service. Interment will be in Salisbury National Cemetery.

Mrs. Odessa I. Covington

Odessa “Granny” Ingram Covington
April 3, 1916-June 19, 2011
 
Mrs. Odessa “Granny” Ingram Covington of 3590 Carver School Road entered into eternal rest on Sunday, June 19, 2011 at Forsyth Hospital, after a brief illness. Mrs. Covington was born in Anson County on April 3, 1916.

She was a faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church where she formally served on the Galaxy Club, Missionary Circle #10 and a Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Covington retired from the WS/FC School System, Speas Elementary School.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Marcellus and Mary Huntley Ingram; husband, Eller Hinson Covington; daughter, Sarah Patricia Wade; brothers: Frank, William, Jr., Thomas and Goldie; sisters: Maddie, Lilly, Odie, Elsie and Alice.

She is survived by daughters: Lee Esther (Sonny) Wright and Delray Cox, her caregiver; grandchildren: Katrina (Stevie) Bullock, Rita Oti, Kerry Wade, Brian (Kim) Smith, Marcus (Ashely) Smith, Monnette Smith; great grandchildren: Latoya, Jamaal (caregiver), Kedron, Jasmine, Jahnay and Deja; and two great great-grandchildren, Dionte and Jacolby.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Shiloh Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends at 12:30 PM on Thursday at Shiloh Baptist Church.
 

Mr. James Winfred Henderson

Winfred Henderson was born to George and Lethia Henderson on the 12th of March, 1924, at 808 Bank Street in the Columbian Heights neighborhood of Winston Salem and passed away on the 11th day of June, 2011 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. He graduated from Atkins High School at age 16, and attended NC A&T University before leaving North Carolina to join his brother, George Jr., for better opportunities in New York City. Winfred, who was also known as James, married Christina Howard in 1947 and they settled down on Hancock Street in Brooklyn, NY. In the 1960’s, together, the couple raised four children, Mona, Heather, Kenneth, and Steven.

Mr. Henderson was preceded in death by both his parents, his brother, George, sister, Margaret H. Penn, step-mother, Bessie Henderson, and wife, Christina.
He is survived by daughters Mona Henderson (Rickey Wilson), and Heather Henderson, granddaughter Kayla DelaMadrid, sons Kenneth and Steven Henderson, and grandchildren, Sasha Grant, Steven Henderson, Jr., and Tenisha Henderson.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, June 15 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. The family will greet friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Mrs. Cora Jane Burns

Mrs. Cora Jane Burns, 84, spent her first day in Glory on Thursday, June 9, 2011. She went peacefully surrounded by her family and friends.

Mrs. Burns is survived by her daughter, Rona of Winston-Salem, NC; son, Charles (Lula) of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren: Lia (Yonas) Melakou of Alexandria, Va, Shana (Akaron) Davis of Manassas Park, Va; Devin Burns of Greensboro, NC and one great-granddaughter, Summer Davis. She is also survived by sisters: Mattie (Moses) Williams-Vincent of Rural Hall, NC, Deadra Turner of Decatur, Ga and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM on Monday, June 13th in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. The family will greet friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Entombment will be in Gardens of Memory.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Hospice of Winston-Salem or the ALS/Catfish Hunter Foundation.

Mrs. Joyce S. Wharton

Mrs. Joyce Shore Wharton was born on March 26, 1919 in East Bend, NC to the late Willie Lee and Maggie Glenn Shore. She departed her earthly life on June 7, 2011.

Mrs. Wharton was a faithful member of Glenn’s Chapel AME Zion Church, until her health began to decline over the last three years. She was a member of the Deaconess and Missionary Board and sang with the choir. She retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Mr. Monroe C. Wharton, her parents, two sisters and two brothers.

She is survived by her only son, Earl (Ida) Wharton; three grandchildren: Earl (Jennie) Wharton, Janet Parsons and Lisa Elliott; three great-grandchildren, Darren (Mary Jo) Wharton, Brian Wharton and Justin Parsons and two great-great grandchildren, Jaden and Dylan Wharton. She also leaves to cherish her loving memories two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Carrie T. Shore and Mrs. Anna C. Shore and two brothers-in-law, Mr. William (Watina) Wharton and Mr. Richard Wharton and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 10 at Glenn’s Chapel AME Zion Church with Pastor Dorothy C. Kelley, officiating. The family will visit with friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
