Mrs. Virginia A. Wiseman

Early Sunday morning, August 23, 2015, Virginia Alexander Wiseman was called to eternal rest at the Brookdale Senior Living in Arlington, Virginia. She is preceded in death by her husband, Hoyt A. Wiseman, her parents and five siblings. Her entire career in life was in the field of education, all at Carver High School in Winston-Salem. She leaves many happy memories to two sisters: Daphne A. Wilson of Philadelphia, PA and Amelia A. Lewis of Washingotn, DC; many nieces and nephews, a god-daughter, two god-sons and close and caring friends. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 12 Noon, Saturday, August 29, 2015 at First Baptist Church, 700 N. Highland Avenue. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The Ivy Beyond the Wall ceremony will take place at 11:00 AM and the family will greet friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, Shaw University’s 150th Celebration or Winston-Salem State University Alumni Association.

Mrs. Betty Lou Williams

Mrs. Betty Lou Majett Williams passed away at Wake Forest Baptist Health on Friday, August 21, 2015.

She was born in Roberson County, NC to the late Rachel McRae on April 3, 1936. She formerly worked as a Certified Nurse Assistant and Caterer. Mrs. Williams was a member of First Waughtown Baptist Church where she served as a Deaconess.

In addition to her mother, she is preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Arthur Williams; brother, Fred McRae; and sister-in-law, Inez Heath Page.

Survivors include her children, Jerry (Malinda) Majett, Minister Francina Majett, Garrett Majett, Vickie Majett and Michael Majett; 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; stepdaughter, Sharon (Sterling) Hawkins and special friend Ralph Hampton.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at First Waughtown Baptist Church. Interment will be at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will greet friends thirty minutes prior to the service at the church, at 12:30pm.

Mrs. Vera C. Hillian

Mrs. Vera Covater Hillian, 80, passed away unexpectedly at Wake Forest Baptist Health on Tuesday, August 18, 2015.

She was born to the late Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell Cooper and Denver David Cooper in Pine Hall, NC on September 28, 1934. She was reared in Walkertown, NC by Uncles Garfield and William Mitchell and Warren Fulp.

Vera attended the public schools of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and was a 1952 graduate of Carver Consolidated School.  Following graduation she attended Winston-Salem Teachers’ College (WSSU) on a full scholarship from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and earned a BS Degree in Education. She then earned Master’s Degrees from  Atlanta University and San Francisco State University.

Mrs. Hillian successfully served for 48 years as a teacher in the public schools, associate professor at Atlanta University and as project director with the MLK Dream Center in Atlanta.

Her family returned to Winston-Salem where she  joined  St Paul United Methodist Church,  becoming a vital member of several auxiliaries of the church.

Mrs. Hillian was known for her social leadership. Her time was shared with  Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc, Phi Omega Chapter, Winston-Salem State University Alumni, Brown Chapter  and her fun loving Pinochle Club friends. Additionally she was noted for planning events.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her son, Michael Dale Penn and her daughter Karyn Elizabeth Anne Hillian.
Those family members who survive and who will forever cherish loving memories of her include her husband SFC James L. Hillian; her devoted son, Kenneth R. Penn; and she has also been a parent to Frankie Denise Penn Powell, Roderick (Michelle) Hillian, Michael (Nicole) Rockhead, Elaine Hillian and Michelle Hillian. And her memory will remain forever with her newest love, grandson,   Cameron Craig; her sisters and brothers, Robert (Elizabeth) Cooper, James W. Cooper, Derondia Cooper-Hines, Shelva Jean Cooper and James S. Copney; her in-laws, Calvin (Nancy) Hillian, Sr., Clifton E. (Constance) Hillian, Evangelist Annie Campbell, Viola Werts and Donald Johnson; Vera will also be missed by a host of cherished friends and confidants locally and beyond.
A Celebration of Life will take place at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at St Paul United Methodist Church with Pastor Donald Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Church Cemetery in Walkertown, NC. Ivy Beyond The Wall will take place at 11:30 a.m. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church at 12 pm.

Mr. Olander Franklin

Mr. Olander Franklin, 75, affectionately called “Yankee Boy,” passed away Sunday, August 16, 2015. He was born to the late Sally Ruth Winphrie Hairston in Mecklenburg County on February 12, 1940.

In addition to his mother, he is preceded in death by his Aunt Gussie McCoy, who raised him; a sister, Linda Faye Hairston; brother, Ernest Hairston, Jr.; and a nephew, Talvin Jones.

Survivors include his brother, Ben L. (Joyce) Hairston; uncles, Clea (Dianne) Winphrie and Daniel Foster; several nieces, nephews, extended family members and many friends.

A funeral service will be held at 12:30 pm on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at Clark S. Brown and Sons Funeral Home Chapel. The family will greet friends thirty minutes prior to the service at 12:00 pm.

Mr. Derriman R. Richards

Mr. Derriman “Sonny” Richards, 81, was born to the late Lillian Clenn in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands on March 20, 1934. He peacefully passed away at Wake Forest Baptist Health on Saturday, August 15, 2015 following a period of illness.
Survivors include his wife, Carrie Linda Richards; several sons, daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A Service in his memory was held in the Chapel of Clark S. Brown and Sons Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 21, 2015. Reverend Ardeal Roseboro was the eulogist.

Ms. Bettie A. Hopper

Ms. Bettie Ann Hopper was born to the late Henry and Mary Ruth Canady Hopper on January 23, 1952 in Shelby, NC. Bettie attended the public schools in Shelby. She passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2015 after a period of illness. She was preceded in death by her brothers: Larry Gene Canady and James Canady. She leaves to cherish their memories of her: one daughter, Katherine Michelle Guest; one grandson, Stoney Jones, Jr., both of Winston-Salem; two sisters: Annie Ruth Allison of Philadelphia, PA and Janice Canady of Shelby, NC; a host of other relatives and friends.
The family greeted friends on Monday, August 17, 2015 from 1:00 Pm until 2:00 PM in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home.
