Mrs. Gladys O. Coles

Gladys Oneda Geter, the “baby girl” as she was so affectionately called by her father was born October 31, 1934, in Filbert, West Virginia. She was the 8th of 14 children (four of which have predeceased her) born to the late Harry Geter, Sr. and the late Mary Alice Geter.
As a young child Gladys was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Filbert, West Virginia. She attended Gary District High School in Gary, West Virginia where she met the love of her life, Rudolph Coles, Sr. Gladys later moved to Detroit in 1953 and was employed by Kresge. There, she and Rudy were united in holy matrimony and to this union 8 children were born.
Gladys loved to volunteer. Most of her volunteer work involved being with her children, i.e. Boy Scout den mother, Girl Scout troop leader. She was a very loving, compassionate and kind woman; very generous and soft spoken. She was an active Gary District Alumni in the Detroit, Michigan Chapter as well as the Winston Salem, NC Chapter. She enjoyed attending the school reunions each year. Some of her favorite pastimes were shopping, dining out, traveling, attending movies and plays, and just spending time with her family. She enjoyed studying with Jehovah’s witnesses and later became a member.
She leaves to cherish her memory, 8 children (spouses): Janice (David), Rudolph Jr. (Virginia), Victor (Rosalyn), Larry (Yvonne), Terrance (Nedrea), Linda, Sharon (Tyrone), and Debbie (Craig); 39 grandchildren; 49 great grandchildren; 7 sisters: Bernice, Dorothy, Bettie, Clotile (Albert), Arlette, Geraldine and Larna; 2 brothers: Bernard and Fonda; 2 sisters-in-law: Virginia and Jean; 2 aunts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Monday, October 22, 2012 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. he family will greet friends 30 minutes before the service.
