Mr. James Lee Smith, Sr., age 78, departed this life at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Palliative Care Unit on December 28, 2010 at 8:22 AM. He was born on September 17, 1932 (Constitution Day) in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Cecil Smith and Florence Dotson Smith. He was also preceded in death by a son, David Smith; a brother, Cecil Smith and a stepdaughter, Sheila Monroe.
Mr. Smith was educated in the public schools and was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a faithful member of Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church.
He leaves to cherish his memory and legacy of love his faithful and devoted wife, Lucille Monroe Smith; one son, James Lee Smith, Jr. of the city; one daughter, Denise Mann of Irvington, NJ; three stepchildren, Patricia Harris of Carrollton, GA, Jaelyn (Troy) Hicks of Irvington, NJ and Randall Monroe of Newark, NJ; eight grandchildren: Diondré Smith, Ana Gonzalez, Monique (Deshawn) Drummond, Nadia Felder, Natasha Monroe, Curtis Monroe, Melodie Harris, Michael Harris; one great grandchild, Desireé Drummond; one brother, Robert (Catherine) Smith, of the city; one sister, Lois Boykin of New York City, NY; two God brothers, Roy (Bettie) Hall and Robert Hall; one God sister, Margaret Hill; a devoted cousin, Mildred (Kenneth) Heath; daily prayer partner, Wilbert Floyd; a host of other relatives, church members and friends.
James told everyone to say not goodbye but so long. “Good-better-best, never let us rest until good becomes better and our better becomes our best”, always recited by him.
Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held at 11:30 AM on Monday, January 3, 2011 at Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church. The family will visit with friends 30 minutes prior to the service and interment will be in Salisbury National Cemetery. The family requests that any donations in Mr. Smith's memory be made to Ephesus Jr. Academy.
