Mrs. Maybelle Cobb Hedgley

Mrs. Maybelle Cobb Hedgley had her Homecoming on the night of Wednesday, November 18, 2009 in Pittsburgh, Pa. She was born to the late Reverend Frank E. Cobb and Clarabell Faithful Cobb in Tarboro, NC on November 16, 1928. She attended schools in Duquesne, Pa and moved to Winston-Salem, NC to attend Kate B. Reynolds Memorial Nursing School. She graduated as a Registered Nurse and began working in the hospital, specializing in the operating room. She went to Chicago, IL to further her training as a Nurse Anesthetist, for which she received certification. She retired from Forsyth Memorial Hospital after 40 years as a Forsyth County employee.

Maybelle Cobb married the late Rev. Dr. David R. Hedgley, pastor of First Baptist Church, East Winston in July, 1969. Mrs. Hedgley was an active member at First Baptist Church, belonging to the Women’s Progressive Club, Home and Foreign Missionary Ministry, Chair of the Deaconess Board, Sunday school and the Forsyth Missionary Union. In the community, she was a member of the 25
th Street Flower and Condolence Club, the Winston-Salem Ministers Wife Auxilliary, and Chi Phi Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority. After her husband’s death in July, 1998, she moved back to Pennsylvania to be with her sister, Julia and their niece and two nephews.

In addition to her parents, and her husband, Mrs. Hedgley was also preceded in death by her sister, Julia E. Cobb in July, 2009 and brother, Frank E. Cobb. She leaves to mourn a stepdaughter, Christine Hedgley-Johnson, a stepson, Dr. David R. Hedgley, Jr.; a niece, Lacey Cobb four nephews, Frank Cobb, Jr., Jimmy Cobb, Malik Gray and Marieo Gray; four granddaughters: Angela K. Hedgley, Andrea K. Hedgley, Deborah F. Johnson, and Christel H. Ray; three great grandchildren and many Nursing colleagues and friends.
