Mr. Harvey D. Jones, Sr.

Mr. Harvey D. Jones, Sr. was born to the late Gaddie Jones and Lura Peals Jones in Longview, Texas on March 12, 1929.He was educated in the Gregg County Public Schools and a graduate of Ned E. Williams High School in Longview, Texas. Following high school graduation, he attended Prairie View A&M University where he completed the Senior ROTC Program, earned his bachelors degree in agriculture and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army.
On June 1, 1952, Mr. Jones was called to active military service as an officer. His service for his country included a tour of duty in Korea during the Korean War and Germany. He obtained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel while in the Army and retired from the United States Army Reserve.
At the completion of his military career, “Harvey D” and his family settled in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and he went to work as a Safety Engineer for RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company. Following 27 years of dedicated service, he retired.
Early in life, Mr. Jones accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at Pleasant Green Baptist Church. He continued to profess and trust in God throughout his life. He was a Gold Star Member of First Baptist Church (Highland Avenue) in Winston-Salem where he faithfully served as a trustee, a scoutmaster and a member of the Ministry for G. W. Holland Housing, Inc. He made minor house repairs for the elderly and was a volunteer for Meals On Wheels.
Mr. Jones’ social and civic affiliations included membership in the NAACP, Olympic Lodge #795, Winston Lake Senior Golf Association and the Social Promoters Club, Inc. He also enjoyed fishing, landscaping and gardening.
He passed away on November 11, 2013 at Forsyth Medical Center. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters: Verdia Jones, Fannie M. Willis and Dorothy Jones Blair; brothers: Gaddie D. Jones and Elvia J. Jones
Harvey is survived by his wife of 61 years, Billie Jones and their children: Harvey (Michelle) Jones, Jr., Ronald A. (Shane) Jones and Sonja R. Corrigan; grandchildren: Ryan Chase Jones, Mia McCutcheon Jones, Keenan Jones Corrigan, Cole Jones Corrigan, Drew Jones Corrigan; great grandson, Shaun G. Jones; sisters: Annie B. (Hervy) Hiner of Pittsburg, Texas and Lizzie L. Willis of Longview, Texas; brother, Walter C. (Serita) Jones of Culver City, California; devoted sisters-in-law: Naomi Jones, Gypsy Jones, Gladys Garrett, Vivian Johnson and Betty (Larry)Woytasezyk; daughter-in-law, Michele T. McCutcheon; son-in-law, James Corrigan; God daughters: Jacqueline Spivey and Andrea Epps; special extended family, Larretta Rivera-Williams, Rev. William S. and Agretta Epps; golfing buddies: Roy Phillips, David Wagner, and Tom Trollinger; special friends, James Duncan, Arbry Felder, Butch and Janet Wheeler; a host of nieces, nephews and many friends.

The celebration of life for Mr. Harvey D. Jones, Sr. will be on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at First Baptist Church-Highland Avenue. The family will greet friends at 11:00 AM in the church sanctuary with the service following at 12:00 Noon. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery with military honors.
