Jerry was born on September 19, 1942, to Daniel Lee Hayes and Ruth Boyd Hayes in Winston-Salem. He graduated from James A. Gray High School where he excelled in sports, playing basketball and football. Jerry married his beloved “B” on March 17, 1990, at Fulp Moravian Church in Walnut Cove, N.C. He retired from Ed Kelly’s Appliance Center as vice president of sales and operations. He was exceptional manager of nine stores. He trained many successful salesmen who affectionately nicknamed him “The Hawk.” He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Beverly Kiser Hayes, son Zachary Taylor Hayes and wife, Marilu S. Hayes, daughter Rachael Christian Hayes, all of the home; son, Christopher Wayne Hayes and his children: Jackie, Cassie and Cameron Hayes, daughter, Susan Beth Hayes Merritt and husband, Jody Merritt and their children Joshua Merritt and Ashley Merritt Knight and husband John Aaron Knight. Mother-in-law Jackie Holcomb Tesh; brothers Ken and Danny Hayes, niece Shannon Hayes Callahan and husband Austin Callahan and their children Connor and Ethan Callahan. Jerry was admired and loved by numerous friends and family members and never met a stranger. He was an avid Wake Forest fan who cheered his team, celebrating their wins and commiserating their losses, never losing faith in his Deacons. In the past year he was blessed to discover his gift of painting abstract art and was featured in “For Seniors Only” magazine. Jerry was happiest out on the lake fishing, enjoying the ocean at the beach, or entertaining friends and family around the pool at his home. The family will treasure the blessing of spending his last Thanksgiving as a family at the beach. The family will receive friends on Monday, December 14 from 6 – 8:00 p.m. at Old Town Baptist Church. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, December 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Old Town Baptist Church, 4386 Shattalon Drive, Winston-Salem N.C. with interment following at Oaklawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the National Parkinson Foundation or to the children’s ministry of Old Town Baptist Church.
