Mrs. Katherine Poole

Katherine was born on the Waugh Farm to the late Reverend John and Hattie Hawkins of Wilkes County. She was the youngest of eight children. Katherine graduated from Lincoln Heights High School in 1936. At an early age, she gave her life to Christ and became a member of Chapel Hill AME Zion Church.

Katherine married the late Herman Bailey and from that union they had two children: Leon and Shirley. Widowed in early adulthood, Katherine remarried the late James Poole of Virginia in 1950. In 1954, the couple and their family moved to Winston-Salem. The home they shared together overflowed with warmth and hospitality where a bedroom was always available for family and friends. While living in Winston-Salem for nearly 59 years, Katherine joined Goler Memorial AME Zion Church and became a faithful, active member. She was a lifetime member of the Ideal Club Ministry, the Gospel Choir, Parent Body Missionary and the Home Missions Society. She was also a faithful attendant of Sunday school and Bible Study.

Katherine developed a passion for traveling. She was a “world traveler.” She visited far off places including Greece, Egypt, Israel, Italy, Spain, Puerto Rico and some African Nations. She had a great sense of humor, a zest for life and she felt very blessed to have lived to see the first African American President elected by a majority vote of the American people.

Katherine worked at Whitaker school for 25 years before retiring. After a brief illness in 2011, she moved to Montclair, New Jersey to live with her daughter. Where she continued to live until she required skilled nursing care and became a resident of Christian Healthcare Center in Wyckoff, New Jersey where on May 6, 2014, Katherine Berlin Hawkins Poole, affectionately known as “Doll” quietly transcended to her heavenly home.

In addition to her parents, siblings, and husbands, she was preceded in death by her son.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory: daughter, Shirley Reynolds of Montclair, New Jersey; one grandson, Lance Johnson of Hillsborough, New Jersey; one great grandson, Ryan Johnson; a niece, Bettye Blythe of Washington, DC; a nephew, Paul “Teddy” (Barbara) Hunt of Rhonda, North Carolina; several great and grand nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held at 1:00 PM on Friday, May 16, 2014 at Chapel Hill AME Zion Church in North Wilkesboro, NC. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Interment in the church cemetery.
