Dr. Ernest B. Hodge

Dr. Ernest B. Hodge passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, January 25, 2015. He was born to the late Bertha and John W. Hodge in Vicksburg, MS, on September 28, 1927.

Dr. Hodge earned his bachelor’s degree from Tougaloo College in Mississippi and his MD degree at Meharry Medical College

A pioneer in his field, Dr. Hodge was the first Black Anesthesiologist in the state of North Carolina. Following an internship at St. Agnes Hospital in Raleigh, NC, he relocated to Winston-Salem and practiced at Kate B. Reynolds Hospital until its closing. He then joined the staff at Forsyth Medical Center where he led the Anesthesiology Department until his retirement in 1981.

Dr. Hodge was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church where he served a term on the church’s Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Twin City Medical Society and a brother of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Survivors include Bernice Brooks Hodge, his devoted wife of 58 years; his son, Danny Hodge; two brothers, William Hodge of Kalamazoo, MI and Sandy Hodge of Chicago, Il; extended family members and many friends.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 29, 2015 at Mount Zion Baptist Church. The family will greet friends thirty minutes prior to the service at 12:30 p.m. at the church.
