Mrs. Mary Douglas

Mary Elizabeth "Lib" Bennett Douglas, 68 of Winston-Salem, NC departed this life Wednesday, January 19, 2012 at her residence. She was born in Forsyth County, on June 15, 1943 to the late John Bennett and Jessie Lou Moore Bennett.

Mary was raised in Lewisville, NC . She was a member of New Hope AME Zion Church before moving to Winston-Salem, NC. She sang with The Bennett Family and The Lewisville Spiritual Singers. A stranger to none, and a friend to all, Lib was the adopted mother to many children. She was known as the candy lady in her neighborhood. She would tell the young children as they stopped by “pull your pants up, have your shirt on, before coming in my house, and don’t ring my door bell”. She was an avid cook, loved music, gardening and made the best deviled eggs. She was always a teacher in the midst of her fussing. Lib, taught many neighborhood children how to count money, proper dress and always to be your best.

Lib was a graduate of Carver High School, Class of 1961, where she played in the marching band. She was a retired employee of the Winston Salem Forsyth County School system. She was a faithful member of Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe and John Arthur “Tim” Bennett.

She leaves to cherish her memory one faithful sister whom she loved dearly Jessie Marie “Tuttie Bug” Bennett Leak, and her cherished Brother in law Deacon Luther N. “Luke” Leak Jr. Two Sister in laws, Betty Bennett and Barbara Bennett. A host of devoted nieces, great nieces, nephews and great nephews, cousins, Morning Side Community Family and many friends.

Home going celebration will be at 12:30 PM on January 25, 2012 with family visitation from 12:00 Noon-12:30 PM in the chapel of Clark S. Brown and Sons Funeral, Rev. Charles W. Leak officiating, Bishop A.T. Griffey III, eulogist. Interment in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
