Mrs. Melvyne J. Davenport

Mrs. Melvyne J. Davenport passed away on May 9, 2014 at Forsyth Medical Center following a brief period of illness. She was born on March 8, 1944 in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Ivory Kirkland and Julia Wallace Jackson.
Mrs. Davenport attended the WSFC schools and after completing the educational requirement at Forsyth Technical Community College, she was licensed as a Practical Nurse. She was employed at NC Baptist Hospital for several years and she retired from RJ Reynolds at Archer following more than twenty years of dedicated service as a comptroller.
Mrs. Davenport was honorably discharged following service for her country in the 312th Evacuation Hospital Unit of the US Army Reserves.She was a faithful member of Mount Zion Baptist Church where she sang with the Inspirational Choir.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a very special aunt, Mrs. Elizabeth K. Boozer.
Mrs. Davenport was a devoted wife and mother who is survived by James K. Davenport, Jr., her husband of 54 years; three daughters: Robin D. (Michael) Sutton, Janis M. Davenport and Ramona W. Gray; a son, James (Evette) Davenport, III; granddaughter, Renecia W. Gray; three grandsons: Richard W. Gray, III, James Davenport, IV and Devon T.J. Davenport; sister-in-law, Barbara Davenport Keller; three nieces, including a “sister/niece”, Verdell Hayes; four nephews; special cousins: Lynn M. Kelley and Sonja Lowery and many extended family members and friends.Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. S.T. Churn, Sr., officiating. Burial will follow at Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will greet friends thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour at 12:30 PM at the church.
