Mr. Donald Spencer

On Wednesday, April 23, 2014 Donald Spencer ended his earthly journey. He was born in Winston-Salem, NC on July 17, 1935 to parents Selma Gwyn and Frances Spencer. He attended Winston-Salem Forsyth County schools and graduated from Atkins High School. Donald served three years in the US Army and five years in the Army Reserve. He continued his education at Winston-Salem State University, graduating with a degree in Education. He further studied at NC A&T State University and UNC-Charlotte. He was a life-long educator. He began his teaching career in Sanford, NC followed by many years in Rowan County before coming to the WSFC school system. He dedicated over 41 years in the profession he loved. He was a member of the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE), where he served as District Five Director, and the National Educators Association (NEA). In addition to his professional associations, Donald was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and continued to be a very committed brother in the fraternity. He was a very active member of the St. John CME Church. There he was a former Sunday School superintendent, teacher of the Manning Sunday School class, steward and lay leader, and a member of the Men’s Chorus and the J.L. Pickens Choir. He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife and caregiver Jacqueline Ledbetter Spencer; three sons: Ronald Spencer (Pamela) of Belville, Michigan, Donald Lamont Spencer and Derek Spencer (Leigh) of Winston-Salem; two daughters: Donna Montague (Bobby) of Raleigh, NC and Vanessa Spencer of Detroit, Michigan. Grandchildren: Charissa Salter (Devin) and Leron Spencer and great-grandchild, Devin Jr. Three sisters: Mildred Brown and Darlene Sloan (B.T. Sloan) of Winston-Salem, NC, and Lela Gibbs of Bonita, CA; two brothers: Eugene Wade of Charlotte, NC and Terrance Gwyn of Winston-Salem, NC; one uncle: Bobby Gwyn (Delores) and one aunt: Doris Thornton (Thomas); a mother-in-law, Naomi Ledbetter and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, April 28, 2014 at St. John CME Church with Reverend Peris Lester officiating. Family visitation will be at 12:00 noon followed by funeral services at 12:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. John CME Church in memory of Donald Spencer. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
