Mrs. Milrose J. Shores
Mrs. Milrose Jarrett Shores departed this life on August 31, 2010 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born on Jan 1, 1917 to Richard and Melinda Kimber Jarrett in East Bend, NC. She married Gid Shores in 1936 and he preceded her in death after 60 years of marriage. Also preceding her in death were her siblings: Mildred, Catherine and Alma Jarrett, Mable Jarrett Stimpson, Laura Stimpson, Eleanor Williams, Virginia Russell, William, Richard, Robert, Charles and James Jarrett.
Mrs. Shores was a member of Union Baptist Church where she was active in many capacities: president of Pastor’s Aid for nearly twenty years, co-chair for Women’s Day, supervisor of the Junior Usher Board, president of the Effort Aid and member of the Senior Usher Board and the Esther Missionary group. She loved and worked in the church until her health declined.
Mrs. Shores worked in RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company for a few years but spent most of her employment years as a domestic worker. She was employed by Dr. and Mrs. Steven Klein prior to retirement.
Mrs. Shores was a great cook and was known for her fried chicken, mashed potatoes, string beans, caramel and pineapple cakes.
There were no children born to the union of Gid and Milrose Shores but “Ma Shores”, “Nana”, and “Granny”, as she was called,was mother to many. She will be missed by her brother, James (Martha) Jarrett of Philadelphia, PA; her many nieces, that cared for her, nephews and many great nieces and nephews.
Her flower garden will be empty but it was beautiful in her day.
Funeral services 12 Noon, Tuesday at Union Baptist Church, family visitation at 11:30 AM. Interment in Benbow Chapel AME Zion Church Cemetery.
