Moses Matthews was born on March 3, 1952 unto the union of Mr. James K. Matthews and Mrs. Toto Matthews in Wainsue, Bong County, Liberia-West Africa. He started his early education at the age of eight years old at the K. Diabolo Elementary and Junior High School in Wainsue, Bong County, Liberia in 1960 and graduated in 1966 with a Government Exam Certificate.

He later left Wainsue, Bong County for Monrovia where he entered the Matilda Newport Junior High School in 1967 where he completed his Junior High School Education in 1969 and was awarded a Diploma and Government Exam Certificate. He later enrolled at the William V. S. Tubman High School in Sinkor, Monrovia in 1970 where he graduated with a High School Diploma and Government Exam Certificate in 1972.

After graduation, he successfully passed the Voice of America (VOA) job placement test and later was employed by the Voice of America, Careysburg Branch in 1974 where he worked up to 1990. Due to the Liberian Civil War, he left Liberia in 1991 with his family and went to the Cote D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). While in Cote D’Ivoire, he qualified as part of the Voice of America (VOA) Employees’ Resettlement Program along with his family and had the opportunity to travel to the United States of America in 1992.

While in the United States, he relocated his family in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and began employment with Kaba-Ilco in 1994 until February 18, 2013 when he met his untimely death as a result of a major job-related accident on January 14, 2013.

Besides his age, family, and work, he was an ardent lover of the game of soccer. He encouraged every young Liberian in the community to play the game of soccer and made all his children, especially his girls, play soccer in high school and special tournaments. He was the founder and member of the Kaba Soccer Team in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Our hearts are broken as families and friends of Moses Matthews. His death has created a serious vacuum in our family. He was a true father to all who had the opportunity to meet and talk with him.

He was married to Eva Matthews and blessed with seven children and five grandchildren. He leaves to mourn a host of relatives in Liberia, West Africa and the United States of America.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Goler Memorial AME Zion Church. There will be a wakekeeping on Friday evening beginning at 8:00 PM at the church. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
