Mr. Samuel “Sam” McMurray, 98, passed away Thursday, February 5, 2015 at KBR Hospice Home.
Mr. McMurray was born on July 20, 1916 to the late Ms. Maggie Dunlap in Lancaster, SC. He attended the public schools in Lancaster and later relocated to Winston-Salem, where he graduated from Atkins High School in 1935.
Sam was enlisted for 20 years in the United States Army, where he served in WWII and the Korean Conflict. After his retirement from the Army, he was employed at Old Salem for 30 years and at SECCA Art Center for 20 years.
He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church where he faithfully served as a member of the Male Chorus and other ministries.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by two wives, Inez Siddall and Doris Scales; a daughter, Clara Tucker; one sister and several brothers.
Sam leaves not to mourn but to cherish his memory, two daughters, Shirley W. Moore and Thelma W. McCoy; a devoted step-son, Bernard (Gloria) Scales; three step-daughters, Linda Scales, Cheryl Scales and Francina S. Hawkins; several grands and great-grands; Mae A. Archie, a devoted friend for many years along with her family.
Sam’s Celebration of Life will take place Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at Shiloh Baptist Church. Visitation will begin at 10:30 am and the Home-Going Service will follow at 11:00 am with Reverend Paul Lowe officiating. Interment with full military honors will take place on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at Salisbury National Cemetery.
