Mrs. Lillie J. VanLandingham

Mrs. Lillie Jackson VanLandingham was born April 11, 1932 in Winston-Salem, NC to Robert D. Jackson, Sr. and Minnie Bynum Jackson. On November 20, 1949 she married her life-long friend and partner, Carnell Curry VanLandingham, until his death January 27, 1997. Lillie was also preceded in death by her parents, brother, Robert D. Jackson, Jr. and sister, Doris L. Jackson.

Lillie was a Gold Star member of First Baptist Church here in the city. After relocating to Washington, DC, she and her husband along with the pastor chartered Riggs Park Baptist Church in Washington, DC. Mrs. VanLandingham was educated in the public schools of the city of Winston-Salem and was a 1950 graduate of Atkins High School. She was a member of Atkins High School Class Reunion Group 1943-1952. Lillie was inducted into the Atkins High School Hall of Fame in 2007. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Winston-Salem Teacher’s College (WSSU in 1954 and then went on to receive her Master of Science degree from George Washington University School of Administration and Supervision. She was employed by Western Electric Company and the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company in Winston-Salem, NC prior to moving to Washington, DC. There Mrs. VanLandingham taught at Benning Elementary School, Charles Young Elementary School and was a counselor at Charles Drew School until her retirement in 1991.

Lillie was involved in several organizations: Top Ladies of Distinction, National Association of University Women-College Alumnae Club, Inc., Winston-Salem State University Alumni Association (Life Member) and Phyllis Wheatley YWCA, Inc. She was actively involved in the National Council of Negro Women Life Member) where she chartered the Federal City Chapter; reactivated the Prince George’s Pan Hellenic Council and served as President. She was a life member and Cultured Pearl of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., where she has made numerous outstanding contributions including President of Phi Sigma Chapter, Charter President of Zeta Tau Sigma Chapter. Advisor for undergraduate chapters, International Grand Epistoleus (Historian). In Sigma Gamma Rho, she was the International Chair for Project Chair for Project Africa, and led the sorority’s efforts to assist with improving the lives of African women. Mrs. VanLandingham was also inducted into the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Hall of Fame.

She is survived by her three sisters: Naomi Jackson Jeffries, Minnie Jackson Evans and Shirley Jackson Scott; five nieces: Daphne Jeffries, Angela Evans, Michelle Evans, Lisa (Herbert) Kelly and LaTeesha (Douglas) Mungin; three nephews: Reginald (Michelle) Jackson, Cedric (Gwyn) Jeffries and Curtis Evans; special great niece and nephew, Laila and DJ Mungin; lifelong friends: Annie Pearl Wilson, Naomi Jones and Rebecca English; God-daughters: Renita Lattimore, Angela R. Davis and Fredda D. Camara; extended family: Price, Mickle and Cross families; special friends: Felicia Maddox, JoAnn Graddy, Ethel Goodwine, Janice Melvin, Gertrude Mack, Helen Benbow, Vernetta Martin, Sonya Fletcher, Susie Burnette, Ronald Robertson, Paulette Everette, Omar McFarlane, Dr. John and Rosie Raye and Minister Louis Farrakhan; extended family of Mamie Harvey; a host of other family members; a wonderful group of caregivers that assisted her over the years.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. will hold a public Omega Rho service at 12:00 Noon on Friday, April 17, 2015 at First Baptist Church, Highland Avenue. The family visitation will follow and the funeral service will be at 1:00 PM. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
