Mr. Abraham L. Lanier

Abraham Leonidas Lanier was born to James Sanders and Carrie Bethel Lanier on November 18, 1918 in Winston-Salem, NC. He attended the public schools and graduated from what was then Atkins High School. Lincoln University in Pennsylvania is where he obtained his Bachelor Degree in Political Science. While at Lincoln, he was very active in politics and was student body president of his class.

Upon graduating, he went into the Armed Forces Service and his duties took him overseas to France, where he served during World War II. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he went to work for the United States Postal Service, where he faithfully worked for 53 1/2 years, never missing a day of work. He received many awards and much recognition for his steadfastness and stamina.

At 84, after having reported to work, he became ill and required Nursing Home care. In the early stages of his illness, he would lend a helping hand to the nursing staff by pushing wheelchairs of other patients. He was an avid New York Yankee baseball fan and had a deep appreciation for classical music.

His church attendance record paralleled that of his work attendance. After more than a half-century away from North Carolina, he is finally back home to be laid to rest beside his parents....Truly God is good.

He leaves to cherish his memory: a nephew, Samuel Black; three nieces: Betty Jenkins, Carolyn Southall, Melba Epss and a host of other grand relatives

Funeral services: Grace Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 1:00 PM. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
