Ms. Betty Jean Haywood Smith
Mrs. Betty Jean Haywood Smith, of Golden Lamb Rest Home, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 8th, 2010 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Betty was born the first of five children on December 8th, 1934, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to the late Jervy and Katherine Haywood. She graduated from Carver High School and later married Elester Smith Sr. and from that union they had five children. She enjoyed a successful career as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant (CNA). She dedicated over thirty years of service helping and caring for others at Forsyth Hospital, Baptist Hospital and several private nursing homes. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, entertaining family and friends and was considered a neighborhood mother.
Betty is preceded in death by two brothers; Jerry and Berkley and two sisters; Agnes and Emma.
Surviving are two daughters: Brona Smith of Winston-Salem and Stephanie Smith Little (Melvin ) of Haymarket, Virginia; three sons Elester Smith Jr. (Elaine) and Timothy Smith (Nadean) both of Hampton Roads Virginia and Darryl Smith (Tanja ) of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren Kimberly Smith and Darryl Smith Jr. both of Winston-Salem; two brothers Oscar Haywood and Clyde Haywood both of Winston-Salem; and one sister Francise Gray of Winston Salem; and a host of family members and friends.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 14, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Clark S. Brown and Sons Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be conducted thereafter at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Donald Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
