Ms. Velma Penn Hawkins

Mrs. Velma Penn Hawkins, the youngest of three children born on July 13, 1941 to the late Bruce and Sadie Glover Penn in Forsyth County. Ms. Hawkins passed away on August 29, 2014 after a period of illness. She was a 1959 graduate of Atkins High School and she earned a BA Degree in Criminal Justice from Shaw University.

Mrs. Hawkins had a varied employment history which included a position as a Children’s Counselor with the New York City Department of Social Services, School Crossing Guard and Substitute Teacher for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, officer for Pinkerton Security and Investigation Service and  Owner/Operator of Hawkins Transportation System for Children.

She was a member of Rho Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Sisters of Bivouac #530, OES, National Women of Achievement (Pfafftown Chapter).

Mrs. Hawkins was a former member of White Rock Baptist Church and was recently in regular attendance at Dellabrook Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Penn. Survivors include her loving and devoted son, Sean R. Hawkins (D’Netta Breland); grandson, Sean R. Hawkins, Jr.; brother, Willis (Barbara) Penn and many other relatives and friends.

Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at Evergreen Cemetery with Dr. Carlton A. G. Eversley officiating. There will be no public viewing
